Do you take a bass on holiday?

I take a bass and at least a travel rig every vacation. Sometimes we have gone for over a week and I took my big rig. I have mental illness and music is a big part of my treatment and therapy. So it goes with me everywhere I go. I don't fly so that part is simplified for me.
Well, it's not quite like that. For the last 7 years, we have Band Vacation in February, and I can go somewhere warm and read boring history books.
I have to spend 5 weeks in Europe and my wife is going to be working for at least 4 of those weeks over there so Im going to have some free time.
Seriously thinking about buying a cheap short scale and take it with me but I'm worried about bringing a bass on planes internationally.
Can be done? Can I bring a short scale bass into a plane cabin? Will it fit on the overhead bins?
What do you guys think?

I used to bring a Martin back packer guitar. But in the last few years vacation is from EVERYTHING!

For three months of snowbirding in Florida, yep, my main player, an L2K. You never know when a jam night might come along. And to keep my callouses and chops up.
For a short 1-3 week car trip, an older one of these maple two-by-fours and a tiny little amp.
And for our annual 1-2 week trip on the motorcycle, well, some day you might see an old guy going down the back roads, "playing" the handgrips on a Harley trike. Believe it or not, doing this and using the clutch lever a lot, and twisting the throttle and braking are actually very effective on the same muscle groups.
If I don't do these exercises, the next week back playing can be painful, I gotta keep limber.

I've taken an acoustic to the beach with me before.
On my last two trips to Southern California, I've brought basses. I took my Fender Tony Franklin and had it signed by the man himself. On the second trip, I took my yellow Steinberger because it's so much smaller.

No never. I have taken an acoustic guitar but it was only a few times when the vaca was basically going to the country for a few days.
I tried on my last vacation (first in 4 years, last for another), but with a toddler and stroller, toys, a dog...
