Does anybody in here play punk?

Year ago I was in a punk band called The Ways. We played CBGB's a lot. One night another band came on after us called Goober and the Peas. They came out in full on Country music from the 50's clothes, you know pin-striping, fringe, big hats, put bales of hay on the stage and everything.

They start playing - a slow type country song, we were like ***? Then the drummer clicks off a fast four and they blasted into the coolest cow punk I ever heard.

The drummer - Jack White.

Our motto for songs was if you can't say it in under 3 minutes, don't bother opening your mouth.

Ah I miss those days - now I'm in a classic rock cover band. We do play a kickin' version of Folsom Prison, and Ring of Fire though.

That's hilarious.:D

I grew up on punk (born in '63), have played a ton of it in the past and still love it. (Opening for Minor Threat was an experience, to say the least.) I don't know if playing straight-up punk is for me anymore, but it influences just about any of the music I like to play.

That's awesome!! I grew up in DC!

In middle-school i was all about the 80's hardcore punk stuff (eg - Minor Threat, SOA, Negative Approach, Uniform Choice). By early highschool it was all crust and thrash punk (eg - His Hero is Gone, Los Crudos, What Happens Next, Life's Halt). By later highschool and for a few years after, i was seeing bands like Pg.99, Majority Rule, and City of Caterpillar on a weekly basis, so i listened to and played that crusty screamo and powerviolence stuff (eg - Spazz, Charles Bronson, Orchid, Jeromes Dream). After that i got hella jaded thanks to 'hardcore' and i did the hitch-hiking/trainhopping thing and all i listened to was folk punk (eg - This Bike is a Pipe Bomb, Defiance Ohio, Ghost Mice, On Reason, Soophie Nun Squad).

Now, it's mainly pop-punk and power-pop (eg - The Ergs!, The Muffs, The Dopamines, Teenage Bottle Rocket, The Methadones... and my band(s) :D ).

Nice! I don't know many of the bands you mentioned after '80s hardcore, but I'll look into them.

I grew up in Florida, but Minor Threat came down and played the American Legion hall one night. (Ironically, that night was the drunkest I ever got.:o) The next night, they played a tiny place--the PA went out halfway through, so Ian yelled and acted out the lyrics.

I already knew, of course, that playing punk really well required much more skill and practice than non-fans thought. But Minor Threat brought that home. Those guys were so freakin' tight, an absolute machine.

I started out on punk, in a band that played 90 second songs called Lovesponge. Still think Fat Mike and Jay Bentley are two of the most underrated bassists of all time.
Jay posts here once in a blue moon.

I play bare bones punk! I think it's as challenging a genre to do right in some ways (mainly, VIBE) as anything else--country, reggae, etc.

There's many others on here I'm sure. I know the guy touring with the DKs now hangs on TB

maybe not bare-bones punk rock but we consider ourselves a punk band

Link Removed - new EP out this fall.

we were on an almost black flag esque touring schedule from 2006-2009 averaging about 150-200 shows a year. touring in beat up vans, sleeping on floors, playing in basements, warehouses, halls. the good life.

I don't play Punk, but I have been told by reliable sources that I play like a Punk. I wasn't really sure how to take that at first blush, but after chewing on it for a while, I guess that's not a bad assessment.

I take it you mean Dead Kennedys ?
Are they still playing wow !!
Love their music but without Jello they surely cannot be as entertaining .
I saw them in London in 1982, great gig, I think they have to be the best punk band ever in terms of shear aggression and atittude, the best UK punk band was and still is The Damned, I still go to Damned gigs and have one in a few weeks to attend :hyper:

Punk rock band here.

Recordings on there are older material before current drummer and me. New full length CD coming out soon and we're giving it for free. First tour was done with the Koffin Kats a few months before I joined, they're friends of ours. Planning to tour next year.

I wish I could play straight punk, but I'm araid I'm just unable to grasp onto that raw feeling that goes with it. Every time I try to play punk, I end up getting so bored I noodle away, or play overly complex that it doesn't fit. Not to mention All too often I just stnd there, looking at my fretboard. Punk is just too PUNK for me :crying:
