I just can't do all black. I know a lot of people love it, but it's not for me. There are a few natural wood grains I don't like either.
Black is my favorite color and known to dress in all black, but when it comes to my instruments I have to agree with you.
I'm a colour-geek when it comes to instruments.
in my experience, a certain "project" always sounds almost the same, in particular under my fingers, so if I'm looking for a specific bass like a Fender Precision USA Standard, I don't care about the "sound", I already know it, and if it's black I won't buy it.

If I am looking to buy something specific then yes I would consider the color an important factor
If it were a spur of the moment thing or a deal too good to pass up then the color would be less of a reason
And then again there are some colors that I just do not like but I have seen many a bass pictures here on TB that are in colors I do not like but were some of the nicest looking instruments I have ever seen

To me it matters. But if the price is right and it plays and feels great, I can get over the color if it doesn't appeal to me. But most times, yes, color does matter. But it's not a deal breaker most times.
I play in a traditional jazz environment where everything matters. Outside of that fact, I do not believe rock is dead. Unfortunately I often I think good music is unpopular, but that is getting off the intended topic.
Ha! There was a great deal on a white Yamaha C3 (we're looking for my son). Would totally have gotten it, but we were second in line. We live near the beach so it kind of works...
Isn't it ironic - that piano players typically have a single instrument, yet they have one of the fewest choices of finish available? Some folks might say this is a good thing, but I've also noticed that there are FAR more "piano players" who no longer play than other instruments.
Most of my basses are either black or white in factory colour. The others are repaints or simply builds of mine. In which i've an orange bass, a burnt natural, soon to have a blood/velvet red bass & a light cherry burst semi hollow. I've bought basses (pawnshop finds) that i've stripped or repainted. One pbass was black that i stripped to bare wood & sealed, another was a slammer double cut guitar i turned into a Les paul Junior with the dog ear p90 & repainted from factory black to sun yellow.
If i were to buy anything, i'm mostly black or white when it comes to basses. Guitars i can care kinda less. But i'll never have to since i just build what i'd want to have.

<<<The instrument shown in my avatar is sold only with a natural wood finish. I had it painted, because at that moment I was into Fender Sherwood Green. Other than that, I tend to like solid colors, and I have a definite fetish for maple necks. 
Yes, if I have a choice. An instrument just like a car, has to appeal to me. It's not just a tool, it's a piece of artwork.
I think some are a deal breaker. On the great Jazz hunt of 2006-7 (which ended with me building a Warmoth instead), the only 2 Fender Js I really thought sounded good were metallic purple NOS models. And I just wasn't buying a metallic purple bass
So you call the car - an instrument and the guitar - tool. I think that the color more less influences the car, than the guitar. And the right color can only choose the one - the owner.

An Antigua finish would be enough for me to refuse a bass for free.I really don’t care that much, as long as it’s not Antigua.I hate deciding on a color more than thinking about finishes that I don’t like.
Unless the also give me money to refinish it.

I'm pretty flexible with most colors/pickguards, but have never liked natural wood. My preference is sunburst w/tort guard.
Depends on the bass. For Fenders, definitely. For something that's more rare and not easily found, I'll take what I can get if I want it bad enough.
I know you can refinish your instrument, but color can surely make me skip an instrument. I prefer black basses, hate sunburst
