I thought this was rather humorous.

Ok, so is it just me or do all the musicians around my specific area only want to play in one of four things? A.) An emo-metal (what I call Gear-mo) band motivated by their crowd of teary eyed girls and guys and their guitarists thinking they're more technical than your guitarist B.) The poopiest punk band they can make simply for the sake of sounding ****** C.) A cover band strictly in it for the $ or D.) A reggae band that sounds like the other 20 reggae bands in the same town usually made up of hip-hoppers who pick up an instrument just so they can actually call themselves musicians and get away with it.....do I sound bitter?
Not that I have a problem with any of these genres, in fact I'm what you could call bonafide "punk rock royalty" because of my parents, but let's start something different for once, and let ME play in it! So, I'm 25 years old, I've been playing bass since I was 12, and yeah I'm really tired of being the bassist for any of those four things listed above. I have availability on Wed and most nights...I have a job, a car, I go to school, and I don't have huge drug or alcohol problems/issues. I do use 420 but I've come to terms with the fact a long time ago that it's a mind altering substance and I don't need it to survive or feel normal. In fact, I won't be able to in a year from now when I transfer schools. Anyway, I see the fact that simply good songwriting is just as important as technicality on an instrument, I'm not an ego maniac (even though this ad has a lot of "I" in it) and actually very adaptable and agreeable. I have bass riffs written but not structured just because I could never find the musicians that have balls to try and write something different and unusual but catchy and user friendly at the same time. Only downside is that I've been playing on the same bass since 1999 and I never had mommy & daddy money to get a sweet new Warwick or something, and the same amp since like 2003. Good news about that, they both still work and so do my fingers.
Some bands and artists I like to draw my influence from are: The Clash, Tom Waits, Red Hot Chili Peppers (mostly Mother's Milk era), Joy Division, Jamiroquai, Dave Matthew's Band, Joe Jackson, Duran Duran, Louis Prima, Bauhaus, Raymond Scott, Echo and the Bunnymen...the list goes on and on but there's an idea for you.
So what are you waiting for? I've got your Steve Harris trot and your Flea bitch slap right here, let's write some cool fresh tunes that show we are not musically illiterate (technicality) or musically selfish (good songwriting), and something that will get people both young and old, chicks and dudes, black and white, to start dancing and stop crying! Oh and I forgot one other thing, I am quite partial to accordions, banjos, saxophones, whatever awesome instruments you can bring to the table the more variety the more possibilities! Thanks for reading and hope to hear from you soon!
