You’d be shocked as to how much is not known, there’s no ‘heritage’ handing down of tunes in the rock world like there is in jazz along the lines of standards/great American songbook/‘rhythm changes’, etc. that all of those players have to, if not know, at least
know about. I blame the concept of “Classic Rock Radio”, playing the same 40 or so tunes over and over and over and over again with no variation, no ‘deep cuts’, nothing challenging, and the ghettoization of certain eras. It’s no surprise, as those stations are not about music, but ad time sold. There are younger boomers who only know “WDYL” as a George Thorogood song, and even if they knew different, couldn’t care less about the Quicksilver Messenger Service version(too long anyway, even the older demographic has short attention spans)let alone a ripping rendition that is essentially by Robbie Robertson and The Band(backing up Canadian singer Ronnie Hawkins)...
...not to mention Bo’s original. People are passive, spoon-fed. You see, you have to truly love this music to know about this stuff, not just be a mindless consumer. I wouldn’t be surprised if ‘Bubble’ didn’t even know who Chuck Berry was, or at least know anything beyond “Johnny B. Goode” if he did. He’s probably too young, but that’s no excuse.
