I have a TracFone for which I paid $15. I got the double-minutes card for it for a one-time payment of $30. I buy 60-minute cards for $20, and I get 120 minutes for it. 120 minutes lasts me about 4 to 6 months. It doesn't get any cheaper than this! And I know the government isn't spying on me, I'm just not that interesting! ;)

and just because multiple people are paranoid doesnt mean that theyre right either.

And as previous stated, what really do you have to hide that the government would even give a damn. Just by posting this thread the OP has increased his National Threat Level at least 3 notches.

I do thank you for your promotion of library services! That being said - libraries are under siege and budgets are being slashed all over (NOT just the US - take a look at the UK!) just when there are more people who need our services!

Yes, I work for a library (Business Manager) and am finishing up a MLIS.

My fiancee also has a track phone. She signed nothing in order to get it and pays for her minutes at a 7-11. Now how could the gov. even know that she has a phone?

Face-palm. Cells are useful when used as needed. Sure we don't need a cellphone especially an Iphone or Droid, but we don't NEED new gear either.

On the conspiracy thing, I feel like they are a crock of @#$%. Yes I know we're Ip monitored, yes I know they track our phones, and yes I know the evil, mighty GOOGLE is keeping tabs on us, but using our camera's and having microphones hidden in phones take that a little far.

I have one for the convenience, and no I do not keep a landline.

I use one of the cheap "straight talk" phones from WalMart. Unlimited talk & text web, $45 a month, no contract. No, I don't NEED it, but when I'm on the road, it's indispensable when I need to contact my family & vice versa. Like it or not, it's a "necessary evil". Would you NOT want to be reachable when you're away from family, or in a pinch?

I also get all my Vonage call messages forwarded to my email so I don't miss anything...and if I run out of minute money if I'm low on scratch? No big. I just renew when I can. No penalties. It piggybacks the Verizon network, and the service is excellent.

I know it's not deemed as "cool" or whatever as the latest and greatest, but I don't need web on my phone...it can run for 30 bucks unlimited w/o web... I also don't need contracts or penalties. I can coffee shop anytime I want for free wifi and my web book...I don't mind carrying two small devices, they fit in my bag. And, I don't come off as a douche surfing on a phone when someone is trying to have a conversation with me. I effing hate that.
