I have this memory that the older HH series SR's could not get the single H tone.
Perhaps I'm wrong but seem to recall the pre was different?

Question: Can I get the exact single H tone out of an HH with a 4-string Special ?
Seems like the HH models are less expensive on the used market.

I would say close but not exact. My 4H has a downright sassy nastiness to it that my 4HH can't quite match but you'd never know it unless you had both. I always tell everyone if you really want a Stingray get the 4H and be done with it. If you want to see what you may be missing to appease your curiosity get both.

I AB’d the specials and couldn’t tell a difference. YMMV

I suspect with the specials no difference between the the 4H and HH bridge pu.. i have an 06 4H and a ‘21 5HH special. The preamps are different, i use the bridge pu on the special quite often and it has much of the same tone but its a bit mellower and honestly more manageable than the older 4.

I have a 2007 Stingray 4HH. The bridge H sound is the same as an H version (of which I have several) - pick up in the same place, same EQ etc etc. However you get four other v usable tones at the flick of the switch.

I would agree - the Specials (post 2018 - of which I have a 4HH and a 5HH) have a slightly more mellow mid range - however they still have that unmistakable set of Stingray sounds and vibes to them. But with more headroom.

I'm finding that my SRS5 HH with the ebony fretboard is pretty bright. I like the tone definition but am struggling to tame the beast a bit. Any amp setting suggestions? I would like to keep the clarity but mellow the high end a bit to even out the sound and maybe thicken it up just a bit. I'm playing a mesa d-800+/subway 1x15-1x12.

What strings do you use? I have a single H with ebony and find it pretty easy to tame it by turning down the treble and adjusting the mids accordingly. But I like a brighter sound overall so might just be preference.

From the amp you could try cutting treble and high mids, and boosting low mids.

I'm currently using EB Slinkys. But need a string change and have been looking for a new string choice.
Thanks, I've been doing just that. Boosting low mids and cutting highs. Just slightly though. I've been focusing on boosting around 700hz and cutting around 1000 to 1200hz. Is that too close of a range? Do I need to be boosting a lower frequency, like 280/300hz?

I have the same configuration. I've also had the maple FB version. Honestly, I think the maple sounds better for rock. (Just my opinion. Don't kill me.).

I am using a Broughton RFE which is low-passing the signal. That makes all the difference to me. I think a good LPF would help you too.

Of course, strings can also make a noticeable difference. I recall you posting about several you have tried IIRC.

I'd just experiment.

As far strings if you want to try flats I like both Dunlop flats and cobalt flats for brighter sounding flats. Still will tame the highs quite a bit

I'll have to look into that. I am using a HPF on my amp. Seems to help tighten up the signal.

Try cobalt flats .
I keep the slinky on the Low B and cobalt flats on the other strings. They don’t sound like flats unless you mute them.

They start as a round wound and then are pressure extruded until they have a sort of ground-wound feel. They are made of nickel-iron alloy, so they have more magnetic pull than normal strings.

Bottom line: they are louder than normal, and they have nice low mid with some highs but not pingy-bright sounding. Look them up on the strings forum. You will find generally good reviews.
