EBMM StingRay Special Club

Due time always seems an eternity to get here, and then never seems to be here when it's due.
I've been taught patience by life. My 4 HH was my first true high end bass I.bought since the early 80's. Not that I didn't have good gear i did. Also, I was blessed to have friends who loaned me boutique level Basses for years Fodera Classic and FBass respectfully. My Geddy MIJ was my number 1. I wanted a Yamaha Nathan East 5 string, but I just could never find one in stock still can't. Played a friend's 4H and a beat up 5 HH @ GC. I was sold. 4HH was ordered and I'm hooked. Jazz and Stingray Special's are my favorites.

People who play 6 string basses feel limited with just 5 strings. I myself never felt limited with 4 and that's all I've ever had. If your songs are benefited by 5 extra notes go for it, but I'd not be so fast to part with that 4H.
I play both and generally don't feel limited on my 5. I just know which bass to pick up at the right time. Haven't owned a 4 in 20 years, I definitely feel like something's missing when I play one now.

These Specials are so darn gorgeous to look at that I felt motivated to photograph my 4H in Maroon Mist. It was my very first special purchased in 2020.

Sorry if this has been addressed and I just didn't see it (searched and scanned this forum), but can anyone tell me what the "Series + Filter" (aka pickup selector in Position 2/middle) on my MMS 5H Special does? Is the Filter a Low or High pass? When listening through my GK112 (with and w/o headphones), I'm thinking it's a High Pass filter, but not sure I trust my ears about it.

Someone previously shared the wiring diagram, but resharing again here for convenience. Thanks!

Hey all - still loving my 5H in Frost Green Pearl - but considering a 5HH (which I’ll have to buy without seeing in person and ship to NZ). Two questions:
  1. Anyone got pics of a Special 5 in Black Rock? (i.e. performance pics rather than just website sales pictures - keen to see how the finish shows up “in the wild”
  2. Anyone done this coil on/off mod to a 5HH (to “add” a HS configuration)

Cheers!

I want to do this mod. I contacted the guy asking how he did it and he sent me this schematic.

It finally has arrived! Love the neck, the finish, THE WEIGHT!!! (3,9 Kg / 8.6 lbs), KILLER B-String!

Everything is SO good... EXCEPT: The toggle switch is not working correct. I get the serial mode, but the other two are just really really quiet and there's a slight hum. It worked for the first 10mins and then went really quiet. I guess it's just a bad soldering joint. Anyway... I'm NOT gonna send this one back, it is SO good and this particular model and color only come every 6 months or so over to Germany.

Has anybody a Stingray Special wiring sheet so I can fix the one issue?

Here's an example of how things are for us Europeans:
For this beautiful Stingray Special 5H in Amethyst Sparkle you not only have to wait around 6 months (I bought it via Thomann), you also have to pay 3399 EUR which converts to currently 3697 USD! That is a lot of cash!

So I saved up and wanted to use this beautiful bass on an arena tour here in Germany, but right out of the box the switch didn't work. Now I have to wait another 8 weeks! for a repair - which means I can't play this beauty on this tour in mid June and will have to find a different solution. Unfortunately, there seems to be no official distributor in Germany anymore, which is really sad and slows down the process. But for that amount of money I would have hoped for express shipping from EBMM. Honestly, I wonder if I should just have bought a used Lakland and that's it.

Here's a quick update: After 9 weeks of waiting, Music Man sent THE WRONG SPARE PART! I ordered the instrument in march, received it in april, had to send it back immediately due to malfunction of pickup and electronics and am patiently waiting for the spare parts since april 18th! I can't tell you how disappointed I am in the customer service. Not only did they not send it via express, but they also sent the wrong pickup colour (black and silver instead of white and gold) for the Amethyst Sparkle H. WOW, just wow!

Seems like I will have to wait ANOTHER 8-9 weeks.

They should discount the price for your hassle

That's crazy I had a pickup issue with my 5H and they sent a replacement straight away received in less than a week. I wonder if the custom shop has them low on parts? That sucks maybe I got lucky since it was black pickup with black pole pieces.

Single Coil Tone?

Oh, interesting! Thanks for that. I also found this thread on the StingRay 5 forum; "[…] The middle position is both coils in series with a filter, to sound somewhat like a single coil (I don't think it does), and the neck position is both coils in series.[…]" It seems that since 2009, this has been the design/wiring for Position 2/middle.

When listening more closely, I guess I can hear a "less full" sound. So, I guess this makes sense. Thanks!
