Ed Roman Lowrider?

I guess then that I am one of those "idiots" that a poster spoke of. You know, I'm sure that the guy is an absolute jerk. I have no doubt of it. However, a couple of years back I was in the market for a Ric 4003 in Midnight Blue. Dealers around here (KC) said SURE! they could get me one in 6-8 months. Knowing that I was going to be in Vegas I called Ed Roman and was told "No Problem! Ed knows the guys over at Rickenbacker." I was picked up at my Hotel (The Mirage) and taken to their showroom. Now, granted I am an "older" bass player :hmm: but I was treated as though I were a multi-millionaire. Ed didn't have any Midnight Blue in stock but told me that he would have it delivered to my home (back in KC) within two weeks. I paid up ($1,020) and went back to my Hotel and had a great stay. I got back to KC in a week and within 2 days of my return home the UPS man arrived with my Ric.

Now, as I posted earlier, I understand the reputation that Ed has and I am sure that it is well deserved. However, in my case, I can't complain. Call it luck. Call it whatever you want. All I know is that I didn't have to wait 6-8 months for my bass. I have since purchased several basses, but I have chosen to buy locally. Anyway, that's MY story about Ed Roman. Apparently I am in the minority here....

Oh...the lowrider:

From what I read in the last post, it seems to me that Ed Roman is like the old country song: "If you got the money, I got the time." As an African American, I have met more than a few proprietors that operated this way. In other words, people who wanted to tell you what an instrument costs before you touch, or folks who assume what you can and cannot buy without even talking to you, let alone giving you a credit check.

It appears that Mr. Roman is more out front than most in catering to big money types. I'm sure that with all the union musicians and touring acts in and out of Las Vegas, he doesn't have to cater to the tire kicker or the kid who wants to wank GC style. Obviously, this approach does not endear him to most people, but he sells enough to stay in business, so good for him.

That said, I still would like to hear from someone who actually played one of his basses. Adrian Garcia is a Vegas player. Can you tell us if you have actually played a Lorider bass and what you thought of it?

I've had experience with Ed first-hand. If you ever buy something from him, you'd better go in knowing EXACTLY what you want. The second you start doubting or second-guessing, he'll smell it like a shark smells blood. He'll start talking up his in-house brands that aren't always all that impressive (check out some of the reviews on the Quicksilver guitars, for example)

If you're eyeing one of the brands he's got a particular distaste for (PRS, among others these days), he'll try and steer you to his stuff even if you're dead set on it. That or at least to one of the "better" vintage models that'll likely set you back more than a brand new one.

I watched him push a guy looking for a new PRS, trying to get him straight over to the Quicksilvers. The guy hesitated but managed to recover and finally got to try out some PRS guitars. It can be pretty rediculous.

I ended up not buying from Ed when I got around to ordering my bass. Too many horror stories of people ordering custom instruments and options not being as expected.

On the other hand, Ed carries quite a number of instruments so you might get lucky with something he's got in stock. If so, chances are that you'll get an instrument that's not likely been played all that much. There are certain instrumets that you have to buy before you can even touch them, though

Aren't Ed's basses parts basses? :eyebrow:

No, that would be Sadowskys. :D

I was in there last fall with a fist full of casino cash. I even showed him the money, as they say, and he still treated me like a jerk. I played a j-5 clone for awhile that I liked. Then I put it down. He (Ed) says, "So what do you think ? Are you going to take it ?" My relpy was, "I would, but you're such an ass that I would probably puke everytime I went to play it. And, that is a real shame." I promptly walked out without another word. The younger guy (employee), who was there was laughing his ass off as I was walking out the door.

Ed is dicking over Jim Mouradian by offering crapola copies of the Mouradian CS-74 called the "Mysterion" and even having the balls to post on his website "endorsed by Jim Mouradian" I have no problem calling a dick a dick

Touché!!

That bass you played, was it a Lowrider? I guess this is as close to a review as we're going to get.

You know, I've NEVER heard one good thing about this guy or the way he does business. So how does he stay in business?
I was just thinking the same thing. because I've been hearing this offical crap about him for a couple of years.and basically what vibe I got from him was that he is a wanna be frustrated bass player, that is a mediocre salesman at best, and that Ain't saying a whole lot.
I will not do business with him.
