I don't want to be picked up by a limo to be taken to a music store...I don't want to feel obligated or treated like royalty...I just want to be able to go into a store and carefully play all the wonderful instruments at my leisure...poor Ed Roman...just doesn't understand how we bass players think. Posts like this are good. My momma said the same thing, but then again, she doesn't put up with slime soaked sales people either. Word of mouth is the most powerful form of advertising...I guess Ed doesn't need our money. As corporate America buys up mom and pop stores and customer service becomes a long line at a counter, I choose to pay a little extra and support small shops that actually have a passion for instruments, players and the music they create.

I remember he said to me once when I inquired about a Steinberger style bass, "yeah yeah ya know, I don't get outta bed fa any less den fifteen hundred dollas." I promptly responded with, "ok thanks for your time and losing my business."

Have you seen the Ed Roman Guitars tour bus at the NAMM shows ?!?!? It's histerical !! I'm surprised it's not covered in eggs.

He actually doesn't sound like to bad of a guy in the interview.
I really don't care if he is jerk or not. I think we all have dealt with jerks from time to time. I really want to know if his basses are any good. That is what I feel is important.

I went in to his store about a year ago with my wife and son and he gave me the exact same line. At that time, all of the basses were in a locked room and only Ed could open it. He wanted me to show the money before opening the room. I told him I wouldn't guarantee anything. He gave me about three minutes to look and then closed the room since I wasn't ready to buy.

Ed talked up Alembic, Sukop and his own lines. His seemed to have a particular dislike for F Basses though.

One of his more interesting comments was along the lines of owning the bass market. Ed said he was going to sell basses exclusively over the net and at cost to disrupt the market. Anyone wanting to try a bass at his store would have to put down money first. I think it was like $100. If you bought something, the money went towards the purchase, if not he kept the money. This was to 'keep out the lookers and tirekickers.' There was a lot of complaining about the pro players in town not doing business with him and I can understand why.

Kelly Bundy does not really seem to be enjoying that pose, but Ed Roman is. He is probably really nice to celebs, and only celebs.

Kelly looks a little rough in that photo but she could kick my tire all she wants. My first impression was that Ed just cut the flounder.

Me personally, I consider it disrespectful to walk into a store (especially one that is NOT a chain store) and beat on all the gear with no intention of buying. If I think I might want to buy a bass or amp, I'll certainly do it, even if it is only in my sights for down the road. But I'd never play "all the instruments at my leisure". That's just me. If I owned a small mom&pop store, I wouldn't want my inventory of goods to be manhandled like it was K-Mart.

I'm not defending Roman by any means, he sounds like a real turd muffin. But I also avoid many music stores because everything there is scratched and bruised by all the kids who want to go there and use it as a playground.

Being asked to show money or pay $100 to check out an instrument is ridiculous. Over the last twenty-six years, I have bought more basses and amps than I care to remember, but I rarely ever just ran out and bought the first thing I saw without doing some checking. The times I have done it, I have tended to regret it because those were impulse buys that often did not result in me filling a need. I can understand a dealer not wanting someone to just kill time jamming on all of his instruments. Even in stores where I have established a relationship I always remind myself not to get too much at home. The proprietor always knows that I appreciate being able to check out basses and other equipment. That said, I do not hang around in stores where I feel that I must come out with money the moment I walk through the door.

I still would like to get a profile of Ed Roman's customers. It must be highroller types who walk in with plenty of dollars for a specific instrument. As I said before, Las Vegas is a place where such a dealer could possibly survive. I'm still surprised that no one has surfaced who ordered a Lowrider bass on the net or picked up one off Ebay or in a trade. If Sadowskys and Foderas, and other limited production basses are in circulation, then I can only come to the conclusion that Ed Roman sells very few of his own basses, and they are probably are not very good, or least not good enough to deal with the man selling them.

Anyway, I could care less if Ed Roman is an a$$hole or a saint. This wasne't a "what do you think of Ed Roman" thread. It wasen't because I really don't care about personal opinions of the man. I was wondering about the quality of the product, nothing more or less.
