Ed Roman Lowrider?

Well, any bass can have a problem... Even a $3000.00+ instrument. Or you might want different pick-ups or electronics put into it at some point. You might have to deal with Ed Roman to get this done. Good luck with that. :scowl: Also trying to sell an instrument of his might be tricky. When the name on your bass is associated with the biggest a$$hole in the business, you might not get back the best return monetarily. What the majority of people think of the man himself does play into it IMO. :cool:

From left to right:

Buckethead, a very good guitarist.

Bootsy Collins, great funk bassist who originally played with Parliament/Funkadelic and now does solo stuff and plays on other peoples recordings, etc.

Doug Pinnick, bassist and vocalist for King's X, my second all time favorite group. My favorite singer, and a very underrated bassist.

Listen, I don't care about the popular opinion of Ed Roman. I doubt endorse nor do I bad mouth the man because I have had no dealings with him. However, just look at simple logic. The man owns the largest guitar and bass store in the world. The man also pioneered the "boutique" store business model. Not being a fan of Fender (USA) and Gibson I sure as hell appreciate that.Also, he has more experiance with one of my all time favorite brand (Steinberger) than anyone else. Is he an a$$hole? I don't know. Hell, I think Mike Tobias is an a$$hole. Do you care what I think about Mike Tobias? I don't know but you shouldn't, if it wasen't your experiance. All I know is that you don't become the Director of Sales for Steinberger if you are a no nothing hack. I would guess it would be hard to own the worlds largest guitar and bass retailership if that were the case as well. One more time, this was not a thread about the man it was a thread about the bass.

oh, noo!!! i didn't mean to post on this thread!!! oops!!

seriously, I have not played them. My experience with Ed Roman was uneventful. I needed an EUB THAT day, he had one, I went in, bought it, got a decent deal. End of story. My friend KC Hunter was there so he may have "cleared" me.
The only thing I know about the lowrider is that I heard the bassist for the show " We Will Rock You " - which I am a sub for sometimes, bought one because the sound people weren't digging his tone. He wound up losing the gig anyway, I felt bad for the cat. The comment I heard was that the bass did not correct the tone issues. The current bassist plays a passive P bass.

So, after this long, useless post, I cannot say about that bass. Sorry.

The way things appear maybe most people from TB that went to his store couldn't stomach the guy in order to purchase the bass in order to provide you with a review.

Does anyone own one or ever played one? I am curious how his basses play, is it good enough to justify his actions or how many people feel he carrys himself?

Ok, I'll say this, for whatever it's worth....
I am active in the Vegas gig scene. I am also a bass dealer in the Vegas area.. I know most working bassists here. I know of no one gigging or using or even owning a Lowrider bass. There are 3 or 4 F bass users. A half dozen Lakland users. MTD, Tobias, a few Sadowskys, Sukps and even Celinders around, but not one Lowrider. I would think that if the word got out that they were happening basses, I would see at least a couple around.... still, maybe they're great!

I'll tell you what, IF I were looking for a bass in Vegas, and IF I happened to go into Ed Roman's store and found one I liked, I'd find Ed, tell him I was thinking about possibly comparing it to an F bass. Now, IF he tried the $100 non-refundable deposit line on me, I'd spit a big, nasty lugey right on his trouser fly...


I have bought many basses, been to many stores and tried out their top-end stuff, but NEVER has anyone had the gall to pull some crap like that. One guy let me try a bass out in his store, but told me he couldn't let me slap. He got the bass back in about two minutes (I wiped it down with a polishing cloth, cuz I'm just LIKE that), and nobody I told that to EVER went into his shop again. He went out of business shortly thereafter.

That does say something. Even though it is simply one city in the whole country. i would gather that there are very few Status playes in Vegas and you couldn't pay me to play a Celinder or Sadowsky over a Status, I don't feel that they are even close to being in the same leauge, so go figure. All I can say is that I have an associate who lusts after a boutique "
J Style" bass and she is no fan of graphite. The Lowrider based on what I have seen seemed like a decent bass for the $$$$$$$$. Again, I could be wrong.
