Envelope filter/follower addict support group

You really should consider experimenting with different placement of the filter. compressor before an envelope filter will limit the response and range since dynamics is a way to play the filter. A limiter or comp after the filter is a way to even out the peaks that can happen with said dynamic playing. Same can be said for the distortion/drive as each will have a different character.
Gotta agree here - an envelope filter relies on dynamics to drive it, and these will (at the very least) take it down. If you really have to place it close to the end of your chain, I would go with one that is easily triggered - the Mr. Black Fwonkbeta, the EMMA DiscumBOBulator, and the various 3 Leafs come to mind. You may also want to experiment with the effects loop .

Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll check them out.

And yeah, I also have noticed that they work earlier in the chain. I really liked my MXR M82 but sold it because it didn't sound good going into my dirty B7K, which is my main tone for 95% of the time. Getting a separate pedal for cabinet simulation allows me to put effects after the preamp, which is why I'm thinking about getting an envelope filter on the board again.

Got this baby today! Thanks to @lowmid for reaching out! This sucker kills! This might be premature, but I have to say that this might just be the filter fuzz that I was looking for. Glorious!!!!!!!!!

And thanks to @Jay Power for the recommendation!

thank you @moon-bass !!! enjoy this one, it's indeed far from being an envelope filter alone, but a really fun pedal to play with

The Twilight Audio Electronics Jerrytron arrived today - first impressions are good, reminds me a bit of a Joshwah but dirtier. Sounds samples are imminent ...

Also, the finish/paint job is super cool - it's kinda 3d, almost looks like melted plastic, in a good way.

Edit: I'm digging it so far (I know, I always say that. Sue me :-) ). This thing has a pretty funky down sweep, super cool! Absolutely my favorite down sweep on a filter.

Am I too stupid to use the Agent 00Funk Mark II, or have I met the unfortunate realization that this pedal might not be for me? Once the novelty wore off, I'm kinda struggling to get any sounds I enjoy playing. A/B'ed with the MXR BEF this weekend and immediately had more fun with the MXR.

The 00Funk is definitely harder to dial in. The controls are very interactive and it's very easy to get to unusable settings IMO. And (like a lot of filters) it has to be set differently for up vs down envelopes in pretty much every case. But I really loved it when it was dialed in.

But the MXR is also a fairly different filter. It's bandpass with a blend vs the straight low pass filter of the Chunk. So it might be the simplicity of getting great sounds of the MXR, or you may just prefer BP filters. Or some combination of both.

Not stupid just 2 very different filters. While the BEF is designed & specifically tuned to work for and with bass the 00Funk has a much broader range to work with other instruments most having a higher pitch making finding that sweet spot harder to find. The BEF also has a dry control that makes it a lot friendlier to bass players.

I think you're probably onto something with bandpass vs low pass. I also prefer my Meatball clone in BP mode with some dry blended back in. Definitely something to chew on, appreciate you pointing it out!

Huh....thanks for the info. I guess I've been under the assumption that it was designed for bass, so that probably does explain a lot of my confusion with some of the controls. I haven't tried running my guitar through it yet, sounds like I need to give that a go.

I'll chime in here and agree with the others - the 00Funk is definitely harder to dial in than the MXR - which is about the easiest there is. Plus, of course the bp vs lp.

For the 00Funk - start with all of the knobs at noon and take it from there - I found that to be a great starting point. Also, check out their website -https://www.chunk.com.au/ - the manual has some sample settings that I also found helpful.

All of that being said, the 00Funk is one of my all time faves, but it's not for everyone. Best of luck!

I had some time to play around with the Twilight Audio Jerrytron. It is the only envelope filter that I have found that I really like the downsweep on. It's kinda what I wish the Seamoon Funk Machine would have been - I loved the Funkmachine, but it didn't jive with my playing style. The Jerrytron is like a Funkmachine that you have more control over. The upsweep sounds good as well - reminds me of a Broughton Joshwah with a little more bite - especially noticeable where you crank the gain - the Broughton is a bit smoother while the Jerrytron is a bit ruder - but it has a smaller sweet spot. That being said, the magic is in the downsweep. It just gives off a great funky vibe, with a little stank thrown in there if you crank the gain.

I also have to say that the finish is uber cool. I typically don't care too much about a finish - sure, some are cooler than others, but this is the coolest I've seen. It's got a rock like texture to it. The owner was very nice as well.

There's not too many of these out there - the builder says he probably won't make any more for awhile, if ever.

I also have the Caitlinbread Funkmachine "reboot" so to speak on the way, so we'll see how it compares.

The Caitlinbread Changeling arrived yesterday. It's absolutely killer. It's the Funk Machine without the annoying artifacts. Very cool and very responsive to my playing. The Jerrytron has been relegated to the 2nd favorite downstream as of this writing :-)
I guess some of us EF junkies will have to wait until they do a v2. Granted, I am still very happy with my Funky Puppy and Mutron III. Just tried the Proton v1, and it was great, but not enough to make the board. I am curious if the Proton v4 is better.

How is the b-tron III? I like the price but the demos seem so-so. Going to need to hunt for a cheap mxr 82 for a while before grabbing one.
I don't care for it at all, one of my least favorite filters. First, it's not a Mutron III clone, it's a cheap envelope filter that happens to look a lot like one. It's noisy and it clips very harshly when driven - which stinks, because a little bit of dirt adds stank.

There are many better ones that you can get for the price - any of the EHX ones, for instance.

Anyone tried this? I would not mind getting a cheap chinese one, but it would still have to work like I wished. I like some distortion and fuzz in my sound especially for those synth like tones that you can get with envelope filter. So, headroom would be appreciated. I do like the MXR Envelope Filter and it seems like it would work well with the dry and fx level controls, but it's not the cheapest around.

Then I often cycle back to just thinking about getting Source Audio Spectrum, but I really love analog filters on my hardware synthesizers and it feels important that it would be analogue like the rest of my bass rig.
