Double Bass Evah Pirazzi Solo Tension

I use Pirastro EP. weich strings for GD and Obligato for AE, long time since, I love so much that combo. I play 50% bow and 50% arco this time in my life….I prefer EP for bow, but prefer Obli for pizz, that combo is seems the best allround for me…
But now I should setup the bass for solo tuning for a while….
I never used Evah Pirazzi solo strings, it’s closer in tension for EP weich or EP Mittel? The mittel is too stiff on my bass….And the Obligatos bow response not as good for me, bit never tired Obli solo…
Or can you recommend solo tune strings, what feels similar to EP light?

I didn’t find Evah Pirazzi Solo in the list! Is there?
For sure…just copied from the „Recalculation from manufactorer tension data“ sheet.. not really clear, but you‘ll find a clearer presentation on the sheet
Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Solo Solo Medium ¾ A 440 31.50 106 30.91 24.53
Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Solo Solo Medium ¾ E 440 29.40 106 28.85 22.90
Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Solo Solo Medium ¾ B 440 33.00 106 32.38 25.70
Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Solo Solo Medium ¾ F# 440 30.90 106 30.32 24.06
Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Solo Solo Medium ¾ C# 440 32.10 106 31.50 25.00

Thank You so much! Must be a dummy question, but what’s are the two numbers after the “106”? After the the 440 is the number in kp/kg, or not?

These numbers should be the tension after "retuning"... If you take a look in the Excel-File, you'll find the explanation for the single columns at the top...
Thank You! It seems, the EP solo is higher tension than EP weich….:crying:
My bass has scale 108mm so, I have to find some lower tension synthetic solo strings…Obligatos solo maybe works, but I dont like it’s bow response, but I never tired the solo version, just the orchestral….

Given the string length it must be an extrem small violin :smug:

But seriously you might have a look if Innovation Braided are still made as Solo strings or Polychromes exist as a Solo set.

Solo strings typically have a similar tension on their intended solo pitch as a medium orchestral set from the same family of strings. The lower strings of a solo set have often a bit less tension than their orchestral counterparts.

You absolutely want synthetic core strings?
Permanents solo are nice at orchestra pitch, but I've never played them at solo pitch.
Oh, and I play pizz only, so I'm not of much help with this issue.
D'Addario has Helicores and Kaplans in solo-gauge as well.
I exclusively using synthetic strings from 10 years, but maybe I open for metal core strings to if the feel similar….I have favorites for orchestral tuning (Evah Pirazzi) but, I looking for solo strings for bow with the similar feel, becouse it seems the EP. solo is more like the medium Evah Pirazzi….

I checked with GHS/Innovation:
No solo strings for Polychromes, but for the Braided they are still advertised.
I prefer the (orchestral) Braided over the Evah Weich but both are similar in tension and not too far away in sound.

I once heard that the Solo A (highest string) is aluminium wound and that some players didn’t like that. So you might want to ask the manufacturer if this is still the case.
I don’t like aluminium wound strings either, but you might accept it.

The only other synthetic core string set with a similar tension is the Dominant Solo, but the monofiber core is sensitive to breakage by the metal windings cutting into the core and the core is very stiff compared to multifiber synthetic cores.

Since you always played synthetic core strings, metal core strings are harder to press down, even if the strings have a similar tension because the core needs to stretch to get pressed down and steel core strings need a higher force to elongate the core than synthetic (or gut) core strings.

So you might not be happy with steel core strings unless you can lower your string action height.

I checked around a year ago and it's still aluminum. I have had recent braided and honey strings with bad windings so watch out.
