Ever seen a dead Jaguar?

DHL, ha! Another bunch of losers. I ordered a couple 112 cabs from Avatar awhile back and they used DHL. So I'm home tracking the shipment on the scheduled arrival day their website suddenly says something to the effect of 'Undeliverable - Recipient Not Available' or some such nonsense. I called and found out the REAL story.

The dude apparently came out and when he realized that I live in a third floor apartment, it was more convenient for him that I 'not be home'. So after some negotiating on the phone, they agreed to send the driver back out to my place IF I promised to help him unload the goods. Stupid morons...

^^^ THAT is funny. Lazy people...what do we have to pay to get good service??

Hello Andrew,

The pictures came through just fine.

Being a musician myself I know how important it is to have gear on time when it is required for a show, recording session, or practice. I especially know how important it is to receive the desired gear at the best price possible. I sincerely apologize the Fender Jaguar Bass in Olympic White arrived damaged. Under normal circumstances we would have an exchange setup for a new model, however as you stated, this model has been discontinued through Fender and we no longer offer it in Olympic White directly from Fender. We realize this is a frustrating situation and hope we can make it up to you.

Here are a couple solutions:
- We can setup an exchange for a different bass, while offering you the lowest price possible to help accommodate for the inconvenience.
- If you are willing to keep the bass with the damage, we could offer you blemished pricing, and you could contact Fender to have it repaired under Fender's warranty.

Let me know if either of these solutions work for you and we'll proceed from there.

Solution 1: Don't really want a different bass...at this point, I'm willing to call it quits and just play my Aerodyne for the time being.

Solution 2: Hell no. I'm not paying a cent for a bass that has been run over (that's what I'm concluding happened to it...by the way, anyone know the standard axle width of forklifts? That's the only way this bass could have damage at the top of the neck AND at the control plate).

Fender responded, and will let me know soon if a replacement is available (I figured, why not go to the source if MF keeps denying there are none left). This is probably my last hope, since MF won't buy me one from anywhere else...updates will come as I find out more.

It could have fell straight down snapping the neck and then fell on the side pushing the contol plate in but i am guessing a forklift is more than likely.

Is the metal of the control plat pushed in?

That option 2 is complete Bull S*** , blem price is like 540$. If they take that bass back they have to pay shipping exspenses and i dont know what they could even do with it sell it on ebay? Its pretty far gone.I would have been mad and more than likely broke it more and blammed that on packaging as well lol

The pots/plate are pushed in a decent amount, so it would have to be a pretty hard fall to do that, through two layers of cardboard. I'm still thinking forklift.

Fender was quick to respond, told me they cannot do anything (as expected), since it is clearly shipping damage. They told me to return the bass immediately to MF.

Looks like no white Jag for me. Now to deal with the hassle of packing everything back up and shipping it back...this whole thing just seems like an exercise in futility, with me running around in circles...I think I know how greyhounds feel, chasing that rabbit, never catching it in the end, and only ending up more tired than before.

Dammit man. I wish MF would throw you some deal like at least let you keep the amp and you could sell it on craigs for at least 150$, it seems like they cant make much with all there shipping exspenses.

Or give you a rain check because i think the jags are going to be out this fall in some slick new design and colors.

Man, that absolutely sucks. You really got a raw deal here. Hopefully MF will cut you a nice deal to make up for it, though.

I wouldn't be too hard on MF, bui. They would have replaced the bass at no cost to you if they had another one. Unfortunately they don't. The suggestion to work through Fender for a replacement neck was obviously half-baked and wouldn't have worked, but at least they were using some creative thinking. MF originally thought the only damage to the bass was the neck. They don't have another bass, but maybe you could get a new neck. As I said, not a good solution but the only way they could see getting you the bass you want. Failing that, the best they can do is refund every penny of your money which they are also very willing to do - up front.

If you have ever dealt directly with UPS, it is not a simple process to get them to pay for shipping damage. I have twice bought items from private sellers on eBay and had them arrived damaged thanks to UPS. In both cases it was obvious the items were sufficiently well-packaged, but something catastrophic happened while they were in UPS's possession. The private sellers did not want to refund my money until they got their money back from UPS. It took me and the sellers working together for months - literally - to get them their money back and therefore my money back. Yes, the sellers should have refunded my money immediately and then worked out their own settlement with UPS, but it doesn't work that way in real life when the private seller has already spent the money on - oh - their mortgage!

This is a real disappointment for you, bui. But no way is it MF's fault. They ship hundreds, if not thousands, of guitars every day via UPS. UPS never tells MF they are inadequately packaged, they just accept them. MF would replace this bass for you at no charge if they could, but they can't. The best they can do is give you every penny of your money back, which they will gladly do as soon as you put the stuff back in UPS's hands.

It's obviously your decision, bui, whether you will ever deal with MF again. IME they have always done the very best they can for me, and it seems they are doing the very best they can for you, too.

:atoz:

IMO
Get your full refund and buy the white jag from another distributor. I saw one on ebay last week for $799. There are
still some around.

OR

What's wrong with 3 tone sunburst? Those are pretty sweet.

I think it's mostly MF's fault considering they choose to ship it with inadequately poor packaging. You're probably lucky that the damage was so severe rather than something subtle that could turn up months later...

Good luck!

+1

I would take the money from MF and look at other sources for the bass. There is a least one commercial source for a new OW Jaguar bass. I'll try to look for more sources for you.

Good luck!

Alot of you guys are missing the big point of this.

he got a jag and a amp for 510$ shipped the amp could have sold for 150$ easily. Thus leaving him with a jaguar for 350$ roughly

Buying a bass for 950$ and 350$ for the same thing is a big price gap,600$ more for the same bass is alot for some of us like me in college and when a hard to find deal like this pops up i can get really excited something nice i can afford

Thats why its so disappointing.

That sucks, man

you know this has me thinking.

I wonder how much merchandise that music retailers have to write off or claim per year due to improper handling with their shipping services.

It seems like a colossal waste. think about the whole chain.

The person that assembled the bass in japan - did the fretwork and all.

the person that setup the bass

the person that stocked it, probably being extra careful knowing that damaging company merchandise gets you fired.

even the person who packed.

It would be interesting to see all of their reactions upon seeing the end state of the bass as it was delivered to the customer.

Looks like the guys in Brown were "that guy" again.

it should also stand that in this case the money - while entitled to the OP - is in a way worthless.

He's not getting the time he spends to get a new bass back. and the laborers above get zero satisfaction knowing that their efforts to deliver an affordable product with a high QC were in vain. sure some may not care - but others maybe affected by the appaernt futility in the chain of consumption.

it's like the sous chef pulling off a fantastic meal using decent ingredients - and having the customer rapt with excitement -

only to have the waiter drop kick it to the table - then telling everyone involved to bug off.

ok - that would be funny - but it does illustrate my point.

you go to the chef with your complaint, in this case MF

You tell them that they are going to send you a new instrument - free of charge - immediately - WITHOUT sending it back. Hey you are a musician - and you aren't going to waste any more time only to have the thing damaged again.

ALSO get them to ship it IN a hardshell case at no charge AND to use expedited shipped

THEN you will send the bass back.

EDIT: seems like MF has discontinued this bass. that's a major bummer. see if they can fully refund you the money AND have the option of letting you keep the bass. That my save them time in extra shipping charges and such.

seriously - NO JOKING HERE

with the refunded money you can buy an all parts bound and blocked neck and get the thing running again. sure the body may have cracks - but inspect it - or have someone YOU trust do it. then fully test the instrument and assess how much it would take to replace the damaged parts.

Or you can just take the money and wait for a jag to show up used.

+1 Elderly Music is great to deal with. I bought 2 basses from them. Great service and you can always work out a better price. :)

UPS has also messed me up...I sold a bass to someone in New York and they sent it to Montreal...they found it in the back of a warehouse 2 weeks later.

Best of luck

bui, this is a horrid situation that would most likely have me exploding before everything finally got settled. As someone who has sold basses in the past I've almost always used FedEx or USPS due to UPS's terrible record in shipping "accidents" and subsequent awful refunding issues, but have used them twice because of the seller's wishes/delivery issues. After reading through this, however, from now on anything I sell will clearly state "USPS or FedEx shipping *ONLY* - no UPS under any circumstances due to negative reputation" and no changes will happen, if only for the betterment of the Buyer's purchase.

Best of luck getting through this situation, and IMO I'd take the refund and watch eBay and the "For Sale" forums here for a used model to pop up.
