Fake Dark Glass Pedals

Personally, I just don't like the idea of supporting rip-off "artists." You can dismiss that as "virtue signaling" or some other derogatory term, but I prefer to support original creators. (And then there is always the risk that lower-priced copies will prove to have lower-quality components, construction, soldering, etc., and poorer sound and reliability.)

I tend to avoid anything that seems like it is annoyingly overpriced, but for genuinely desirable items, I would rather opt to either wait until I have sufficient funds or else purchase a pre-owned item to save money. I have done both in multiple instances.
You do you, by all means. Nobody is suggesting you not.

You end up on pretty shakey ground if you are okay with that kind of thing but think DemonFX has gone so far that you start questioning the character of anyone that would buy one.
That's same argument used to justify looting.

You can question my character.

You can even imply I am, or am sympathetic to, a looter.

And I can click "ignore" on your brainwashed silliness, and just did.

Lemme add for the intelligent whom I needn't block that I own Dark Glass and Demon FX, once buying the former after the latter, once deciding not to buy the original.

But for the blocked, you can morals-police this ... hanging.

Thank you! I didn't realize TB was self-maintaining. Must be an AI thing.

Nah, pedal companies rip off electronic circuit designs all the time, either with a small resistor value change, or as an outright replica. I don't think it really hurts sales of the real deal, but there should be distinction of marketing and case design so it isn't a knockoff. If I start selling SmushiBox Underground Axecellators, that is a clear violation, but if I wanna make a tube preamp with a fender tone stack, fair game.

Yep.

Looked at the previous thread, had no idea about these pedals...

All I can say is fans of this "brand" should be happy there are "suckers" like me who still want and value the genuine article. This way, Darkglass can still produce innovative and high quality products for DemonFX to steal.
Never mind the fact that all these pedals, Darkglass included, are copies of copies of copies…

I see the winking emoji...

I do, however, think counterfeit products like these are a problem, and I'm not sure how anyone can be in support of this type of business model.

It's not being "snobby" to purchase real products developed by an innovative company over "products" that are outright copies right down to the artwork.
It doesn't say "DARKGLASS" anywhere on the thing so technically it's not a counterfeit.

It's like this : would you guys pass up a steak, in exchange for steak Flavoured corn flakes? It taste similar and is cheap, would it honestly replace the desire you have for a real steak?

People pay absurd money for an instrument with their favourite artists name on it. The value of vintage instruments only go up. Everyone wants what their hero has. Even though the quality has been going down, people will still happily buy an American made fender because they need a fender. Gibson somehow still makes sales.

I said it already, but I do plan on replacing my clones with the real thing. But I want to make my music now. I need a fanned fret base with a long scale so I can tune down and retain clarity. I need overdrives with tht harmonic boost to stand out for a lot of bands I would potentially join.

It's only morally wrong if I change the label and sell it, pretending it's a dark glass, selling it for darkglass prices. Now that's theft
Technically that is fraud.

Today, I was searching the internet for I the DG Harmonic Booster and found a copycat. I wonder how good/bad the copycat is?

This is the first time I have seen clone/copycat/fake Dark Glass pedals.

Further searching found that DemonFX has copies of almost all the Dark Glass pedals. They even sell them on Amazon. I have tried my share of cheap pedals from Amazon and some of them are actually decent. Wonder if these fakes suck?
They're good

Canada's second hand market is abysmal, at best. Everyone in this entire country holds on to everything till they die, unlike the USA's trading culture, where you guys are constantly selling and buying things. It's like this in other hobbies too, like knives. I rarely see anything good in Canada, for much lower than list price. And it's even harder to sell anything second hand in this country. I can knock 50% off and I'll still have tire kickers trynna get me to lower the price, while selling their own things for full price

And I ain't buying (used) overseas either. It's like, 50$ minimum for shipping (while vendors can sometiems do free world wide shipping somehow). It's brutal. Might as well buy it new if I'm gonna do that. While Americans have same day shipping for 25 cents or whatever it is you guys pay

We are so spoiled. I didn't realize how spoiled we were until I was in UK recently. I tried to order something common on Amazon and had to wait THREE DAYS!!! I was even willing to pay for quick shipping but there just wasn't an option. I guess they don't have Amazon warehouses every other block like we do.

I have to question the amount of innovation since most circuits you find in guitar are effects are just reworks and tweaks of long established technology. You can find many of them in circuit encyclopedias dating back as early as the 1930s. They can also be found in freely available tech notes and sample circuits provided by electronic component manufacturers.

The absence of genuine innovation is further evidenced by absence of patents on virtually all effects pedals.

And look how many pedals (including those from the big manufacturers) outright admit to being based on a Rat, Klon, Rangemaster, Arbiter, etc. Old wine in new bottles for the most part.

I don’t support companies just copying some other company’s look or layout. Or simply duplicating their circuit boards. But beyond that it’s hard to claim somebody is copying “your” effect when it wasn’t really “yours” to begin with.

But maybe that’s just me. :)

That is the truth as far as I understand it also

Put simply, if pedal companies were doing something truly original they'd patent it. The reality is that the entire pedal market (especially "analog") Is based primarily on combining and rearranging of long existing out-of-patent circuit designs.

That a good pedal "design" will be cloned is a fact of the industry and that may actually be a major impetus for designers to be constantly releasing new and better pedals rather than resting on their laurels.

Are you a cop? Do you work for Gibson? Just joking.
These pedals have only the same look an feel, not the circuitry, why people call them fake? Do the people call a Sadowsky or a Lakland a fake Fender? Or a Dean a fake Gibson? or a Pepsi a fake Coca-Cola?
It is just a general observation. Not confrontational.
A little remark, the founder of Darkglass was a Chilean who started doing his own pedals to emulate well known pedal brands for friends and himself, then he grew up his own company in Finland where R&D support is strong.
