This list is suffering from a distinct lack of Mark Sandman.
Jack Bruce with Ms. Spalding a very close runner up. Simply put, no one else has both abilities at that level. As much as I like McCartney, Cetera, Gordon Sumner, and Greg Lake, live recordings show the bass gets a little mechanical when they sing. Jack and Esperanza both have a very improvisational approach to the two jobs simultaneously. It's as if they have two brains, one solely focused on bass, the other on singing. Free flowing, spontaneous, and not locked into a specific mechanical part.
Have we ever even listened to Esperanza?? She has the voice of a goddess and bass playing just flows out with no effort! Or is it because she plays that large, foreign, doghouse shaped thing that is separated to a distance corner of this site that we don’t venture to? I guess the question is favorite singer, not best singer...
Or Michael Bishop for that matter, leaving the BTM to fill the front man role as Blothar after Dave Brockie's untimely demise.
