We're all tight for time, but If you've got the time and money to build a DIY cab sight unseen, you just might want to squeeze in a few minutes to read up on the specs?

As I mentioned, good idea! I did in fact just read up a bit, and I'm sold on the 1212/6. And now that I need two LF drivers I'm going to have to save up... but there it is.

I can get driven to some distraction, and sometimes the obvious gets by me. Always look for the "FAQ" sheet... ;)

I used my 1212/6 at an outdoor gig last weekend. I drove it with a GK MB200. It puts out 200 watts at 4 ohms, but I never had the gain above 12:00. The 1212/6 performs quite well even if you don't feed it a lot of power.

Well, my 15/6/1 and brand new 12/6/1 are as we speak the backline rig at the Campout for the Cause Festival in Colorado. They sound great, although some folks have been alarmed at the amount of movement in the 12. I put a limiter on the power amp, so hopefully no one will manage to overload it. It does sound very sweet.

I finally got my 12/sub put together. I've been playing my 12/6-12/sub through a GK 400RB-IV. It puts out around 280W at 4ohms. I gets pretty loud and sounds great. But I still want more power. I'm looking at upgradeing to a 700RB-II if I stay with GK. But I did play through a TH500 and MB fusion with just my 12/6 last week. They sounded incredible as well. Tough decisions for my next amp.

I'm using a Crown XTi 4000 and it does the job nicely. Not quite as solid as my Crest CA9 was, but a heck of a lot lighter.

Pints. I've heard the rumor that Duratex has quarts. I have a standing order for 100 qts if they get the machinery for it going.

Recessed spring folding handles now come with gaskets. Penn finally got some back in stock.

If you took the TB153, replaced the xover and the midrange and moved the horn over closer to the mid, I think you could get a pretty close approximation. It won't be capable of quite the same power though of course.

Remember the mid needs a cup or some other kind of enclosure.

I'd also consider taking a look at the bracing when you open it up. Chances are good it's on the sparse side.

I just posted in a TB153 thread that it seems to me that some feel the Avatar TB153 is maybe not the optimum build of the 15/6/1 design. Would I be correct in that assumption?

Or is it more like the TB153 is an inferior, unworthy build of the 15/6/1 design? Just wondering as I am close to ordering a 15/6/1 from someone soon. No war words here, just searching for some honest, descriptive replies appreciated. Peace, ernie. Happy Memorial Day!

It's got a few weaknesses:

Ergonomic
-It's fat like a 4x10 - the fEarful is tall and skinny which is way easier to move
-It's using 3/4" ply so it's heavier than it needs to be

Sonic
-The horn and mid are too far apart
-The crossover is almost surely kind of generic
-The sealed back mid is not going to sound as smooth as a 6nd410 or Alpha6a in the proper sized enclosure.
-The mid is not as loud as the fEarful spec'd mids relative to the woofer, so it's not capable of getting as middy as a 4x10 like a fEarful is.
-The port area is a bit on the small side, meaning you're going to experience port noise before max excursion. This is possibly a non-issue for most people because with the lack of power handling of the midrange you're likely to melt the midrange before you experience chuffing.

Hope that helps. IMHO, it's a great budget cab. You can't get a nicer cab for the money. Especially the 4 ohm model.

I can't think of a single cabinet on the market that I would buy instead of a TB153, other than a fEarful.

I've been curious about this, so I did some measurements based on the published dimensions and photo of a TB153 (grid overlay method).

The TB153 port appears to be 2" x 23". Subtracting for the center support, port area is 2" x 22.25" = 44.5 square inches. The fEARful 15 cabinet port is 61.75 SI, so has 39% more port area than the TB153.

I'd welcome a measurement confirmation or correction from a TB153 owner. If it's been posted already, I missed it.

thanks so much man, that was very a descriptive, informative and helpful reply. And you did not boost or trash either brand in the process so kudos.

I can prolly live with a "fat 410" shaped cab and I move my cabs with a quality folding cart so a few pounds is not an issue; tho lighter to me is always a plus. Quality of build and tone is quite important to me though.

I guess I need to find a fEarful builder to get a price quote and maybe one that's close to TX if that will defray some of the ship cost to me. But I'm ready to order a TB153 this week if turn around time is soon. Not really in a place to wait weeks(?) for a cab to arrive. Thanks again for that great reply here.
