Anyone here get a pre-built crossover from Leland? If so, do you have any pics and how easy was it to wire up?

I'll be wiring mine up to parallel speakons, so if anyone has any tips for me, I'd appreciate it. I've never wired up speakons before but they look rather self explanatory. Still, I'm not sure with having the mid and 3015 being wired up to the crossover if both +1/-1 and +2/-2 get used on the speakons? Everything I've read suggested using that for bi-amping. Is that the case with this crossover?

I don't know what the layout of the speakerhardware pre-built crossover looks like.

Anyone?

Just wire them to the +1 and -1 and leave the +2 and -2 alone. Leland most likely included the push on terminals for the speakons, just run two pairs of wires into each of them and use it as a jumper from one speakon to the other.

easy peasy

That what I was thinking...just wanted to be sure there wasn't anything else involved.

I got the whole speakon/jack plate kit from Leland.

Also, way back in the early eighties when I played electric sax and synths primarily, my rig was a Fender 75 all-tube amplifier

Heh. I had several friends who rocked those amps for guitar. I wrote one of the service bulletins for a stability mod many ended up getting eventually. I have the 30 watt version sitting right here in my living room:

Yep. If the 3012LF would have been available at the start, the 1212/6 would be my "loud gigs" cab instead of the 15/6. The extra sensitivity and full SPL potential with thermal limits closer to mechanical limits, along with the 6" more height and ease of transport with tilt-back wheels and handle - it's so frickin' cooool.

Even if it DOES weight 75 pounds.

bah-duh-bum ; }

60.4 pounds :smug:

I regret not having my mod'd 75 around still. I really loved it and people thought I was a sax maniac when I got to rolling out the wah-wah and harmonizer with it.

The 30 works great for the mid driver in a biamped fEarful cab, as I've mentioned a few other times. I've been talking to Duke about doing a cab for guitar that the head (and many other Fenders) would fit into too...;)

Here's proto flatpack photos from Leland:

With the biscuits, right angle aid, and instructions this should be a sweet no-brainer for folks!

Given how many guys seem to build these in their apartment living rooms , these packs are GREAT! I have a workshop so it ain't no big deal to build cabs, but these flatpacks will make it easy for so many who may be reluctant to try DIY because of a lack of skills or shop to build them in.

How cool!!!

In the past I've jumpered two Speakons with solid core strands from 14-gauge Romex I got at a job site. But yeah, I think Leland's got it covered.

It should be a no-brainer (which is perfect for me, not having a brain sometimes. :p).

Anyone have pics of Leland's crossover? My stuff is supposed to be delivered today (on schedule according to FedEx, but we are having some NASTY winter storms that could delay things).

I'm just getting anxious and trying to pass the time reading (and snowblowing/shoveling...UGH!).

Hey, I resemble that remark. But it was my house and in the kitchen! (sounds like I'm playing Clue) Nothing tests you wifes love like saws and PL premium in her kitchen! It's warming up now so the 12/sub will be constructed on the deck. Leland, the flat packs are pretty damn cool though......

Hey, I'm lucky my wife even tolerates the sawdust in my basement workshop (when it's cold...when it's warm my workshop is out in the garage). For some reason no matter how careful I am or how much I clean I track sawdust ALL over the place. And boy does she love the fumes from PL, poly, paint, etc. :D

She's a sweetheart though. Music isn't my full time profession anymore, but it is my part time job and I have a real passion for it and she would never ever want me to quit playing. So she tolerates my cab builds. Besides, she was real supportive of buying all this fEARful stuff, so I have to give her props for that.

Sundogue, these are the instructions that Leland sent me, when I e-mailed him for help.

Amp + goes to in + on both boards. W+ on the board with the big iron coil goes to the woofer. W+ on the other board goes to the midrange -. Amp - goes to in - on both boards. W- on the board with the big iron coil goes to the - on the woofer. W- on the other board goes to midrange +

Ah...that makes sense. I've worked with commercial crossovers where there is a single contact on the board for each +/- from the jack and then the Lo and High outputs from the board go to the dedicated speaker.

These are on two boards, so the I'm assuming we (the builder/installer) wire them together instead of the path being on the board itself. How big are the boards (physical dimensions)? Just trying to imagine them on the port shelf...

I built a roof and enclosed one end of the deck I built a few years back so I have half of my deck in protected space now and it was intended for both recreation and hobbies. Unfortunately bad weather hit before I could paint and trim and get shingles over the felt and vapor lining. So I'll be out in the good weather building and painting. But NOT on cabs ; }

That's fairly typical for me. When I built my workshop in the basement I had all kinds of projects in mind to do down there. But I spent more time actually working on the workshop itself, or other home projects, that MY projects were always put on the back burner.

Of course, I'm married and have four kids so "free time" is more conceptual for me at this point. :D

This is kind of a crosspost from another thread, but it's something I've meant to bring up here before:

And though many a hybrid head has tried, for me, I only experience this with both tube preamp and tube output sections.

Yeah, it takes both tube pre and power - and transformers, really. Hey Tom, you know both Passinwind and I have always contemplated the fEARful as a biamp rig with SS on the woofer for the bottom, and all tubes on the mid driver and waveguide (if any). At one point I had a line on a cheap Carvin TS100 for the mid and treble but that deal evaporated.

There used to be a stereo Peavey tube amp that bridged too but I think it weighed more. But recently this jewel caught my eye, the Invalid Link Removed:

Light and small for tubes, and some great features for the way I'm thinking. 600 smackers?!?!? I have to admit I'm kinda lusting.

That might be cool, though I think that some of the magic comes from the interplay of the woofer with the tubes (and transformer).

One thing I have done in the past which sounds great is to run a tube head into a DI that can accept a speaker level input (like the Avalon U5) and then run that signal to a powerful SS amp. It's a bit of an unwieldy setup (and I always ran a load on the tube amp, regardless), but it can sound great. I know that a couple of companies (H&K, TecAmp) have used heads with preamp tubes and small power tubes feeding a solid state amp (or allowing you do so with an external amp), but I'm wondering if there's room for more innovation along these lines in the marketplace.

Tom.

Hey Tom,

I've done tube/SS biamping in the past, and it does get a little messy. But a small DSP crossover in the effects loop could be the answer. Passinwind has been working with a cool little DSP that could easily replace my cigarette-pack-sized QSC DSP4.

All tube designs being what they are that will be enough for mids and up. But they also have a 100 watt version - wider and heavier of course.

But I've also been looking for a good used deal on one of these 37-pound wonders to drive my fEARfuls:

VB-3.jpg

I've been lusting after a VB3 for...well, since they first were introduced. About three times I came dangerously close to buying a VB2. Very cool tube amps without the weight. With a fEARful I don't think I'd settle for anything less than the VB3 now.

My wife has made me swear off DIY cab building. I'm still allowed to do amps and preamps though, and frankly I'm much better at that stuff anyway.;)

I have been sitting on a custom Mercury Magnetics output transformer an engineer friend gave me several years ago, waiting for the muse to visit. It was meant for a 6SN7 with the two sections in push-pull, IIRC. Hmmmm...:ninja:
