I had Aguilar pickups in a P/J bass that I sold. I didn't love that bass, but I did think that Aguilar made some really great pickups.

I gave my American Pro Precision V five months with the stock pickup. At my gig last weekend I swapped between it and my G&L LB100. Whenever I went to the Am Pro I had to crank the gain on my amp a bit to get it to where the LB100 was volume wise. I finally gave up and had a Nordy NP5F put in today. Haven't played it at stage volume or in a band setting yet, but I'm already happier with the overall tone and response of the Nordy over the stock V-Mod pickup.
Played the 5 string P last night at rehearsal. Sounds much better than the carvin jazz I was playing for this kind of stuff.
I quite like the neck...i was apprehensive because the carvin is very thin profile. No adjustment period needed.
Put together really well, and so far no complaints at all! It's a relief as I couldn't play one before purchase. And it's pretty.

The new Jazz pickups are obvious copies of these EMG Pickups which I currently have in a Lakland 44-60 Invalid Link Removed These pickups are awesome and in a band setting RULE! I had a chance to slide over to Sam Ash today and play the AM Pro Jazz & Precision against the AM Standard Jazz & Precision Vs. the Elite P/J & Jazz. After quite some time all I can say is I'm buying an Jazz AM Pro. The neck & frets are just too sweet! I've lived on American Jazz basses for 20 years now and these new ones are awesome! I'm Sorry but the Elite was a little too overboard for my taste. even in passive mode they didn't have the feel and flow of the AM Pro Series which inspired me to play better & more lively, I think its the preamp and the neck was to glossy. I do wish there were more color options but beggars cant be choosers lol. The American Standard series basses are amazing! I love them and have owned many but the new upgrades on the AM Pro's are killer. going back and forth between the necks kind of pissed me off. I was mad that the AM Standard neck didn't flow anywhere a smoothly or play as effortless as the new AM Pro's. If you don't like the way the new pickups sound, change em out like we've been doing for years.
I appreciated your comparison. Been wanting to try the Elite.model for the compound radius neck, but sounds like you barely noticed it for the heavy gloss...
How does everybody like the Am Pro P neck compared to the Am Std P neck? Is the Am Pro thicker, beefier?
I have a '98 Am Std P, a '07 Am Std P and a late 80's MIJ '62 Reissue P.
The '62 Reissue is my favorite neck. It seems more shallow, which is more comfortable for me.
The '98 seems thicker than the '07 and I don't care for it.

@punchclock, the Pro's neck is definitely beefier than the AmStd neck. I like it, but you should try one out first if you're thinking about buying one, or get it from a place with a good return policy.
The Elites with the binding had the gloss. The PJ Elite I played without binding was a smooth satin finish. Up against the new Pros they had nothing.
Have a PJ Elite ... neck is a bit too beefy for me .. i'd gladly swap it for an Elite jazz bass neck but they are hard to find..
MIJ PB70 natural colour in my avatar has a very nice 70s style "A" neck ... super playable for me.
Recently bought an Am. Pro. P body with an Am. Std. jazz bass neck to install on it .. I decided not to run any risks with this latest purchase and I think this will be a very decent hybrid!

Bit The Bullet! Sold my Lakland 44-60 Skyline & Bought an Olympic White AM Pro Jazz from Zzounds this morning. Should be here Thursday. After all the A/B/C testing I did for 3 days straight the AM Pro Jazz was the winner for me personally.
I don't know who started this mix magnet pickup trend but here is Fenders take on The Jazz V-Mods: "For electronics, the American Professional Jazz is outfitted with a pair of V-Mod Jazz bass pickups—a clever single-coil design from longtime Fender builder Michael Bump that utilizes a blend of alnico 2 magnets (on the bass side) and alnico 5 magnets (on the treble side)." -Steve Cook, Premier Guitar. This means that one side of each pickup is Alnico 5 and the other side is Alnico 2. Invalid Link Removed Now EMG has had a similar set out for a while that I've been using, the EMG JV52 set (passive). On the EMG set The front/neck pickup has Alnico 5 pole magnets and the bridge pickup has Alnico 2. I actually don't know which set I like better. The EMG set sounds a bit fuller in the lows/low mids and even throughout the hi-mids & treble with great growl and punch. The V-mod Jazz pickups have slightly lower output than the EMG. They have very even lows/low mids (very tight and articulate). The hi-mids/treble have a bloom in the tone that helped me cut through the mix quite well. They also have great growl & punch. My band mates like the V-Mods more. I'm still not sure how I feel yet but they are growing on me. The V-Mods had to be EQ'd a bit differently than other jazz pickups I've used. With the EMGs I never changed the settings on my amp. Even when using DiMarzio Model Js or the Fender CS 60s I never changed my amps EQ. The V-Mods have a gift for the mix and they had me tweaking my knobs a bit. They sat great in the mix so well. I heard myself better than usual & actually could pull forward in the mix without stepping on my two guitarist musical toes.

Been tested recently the V mod pickups ... they are great IMO ... not as powerful as the EMG GZR but less harsh and warmer although quite clear ... nice idea Fender... best P bass sound I've tried so far 
Is there any good soul TBer who wants to make or who has got sufficient data for making an impartial comparison between the sound of the following P bass pickups?
