Fender Bass prices???

Plenty of people with money are satisfied with non-US basses. Doesn't really matter for mass produced stuff.
Where I live, a new American Standard P Bass costs between AUD2400 - 3000, which as at today's exchange rate equals USD1700 - 2100. But that's the price you pay for living in the best place in the world

My AVHR 70s Jazz was more than twice my American Special Precision and BOTH are great basses at price points that are friendly one way or the other on the scale. I think their prices are more than fair and throw in imports (MIJ, MIM, etc) and I fail to see anyone they are excluding.

I paid $699 off the shelf @GC for an American Special P bass in March of this year.......It plays and sounds great. Main difference is the hardware is the same as the MIM and the pickups were stock generic. Well guess what, it never goes out of tune and bridge is perfect as is, so the hardware is just fine. I also spent $60.00 for the Fender "original" 62 pickups, and now it sounds even better. It would be difficult for me to justify the extra $300-$500, after scoring the Am Special.

I'm not middle class then but there are several reasons for that among a few that I had no control over.
My dealer told me that but for a few special signature basses Japan is not making any Fender Basses now days.
Try making jerky sometime. It is amazing how much weight the raw ingredient (anything from beef to tofu) loses in the drying process. The beef in a few-ounce $5 bag of jerky may have started off as a London broil that you would pay $5 for at retail anyway.
Similarly for basses, everyone knows drying the body and neck wood properly is important for tone and stability.

I hear ya!! I was lucky enough to get my Godin from ebay for only $400 with flats, decent gig bag, stand and lead. It was the score of the year for me. There's no way I would have paid for a new American made Fender....... and they really didn't feel that good to me either.
No Fender USA is not. You are correct, but MIJ'S that are NOS are out there still. I bought one of the last blue sparkle Steve Harris new that I could find less than a year ago. I also bought a new MIJ Jaguar bass this year as well that was a hold over. You can find them but you gotta hunt and used ones are around too. Great basses, great QC, and reasonably affordable. The SH was the most at around $1100.00, then the Jags, around $700.00-800.00 new, one of my Geddys at $750.00 new and an Aerodyne Precision bass (used lightly) at $450.00, so all over the place $wise. IMHO, most MIJs are of high quality so close to US made that if you are on a budget, grab one. And yes, I do have some of both so I certainly can compare hands on.

Shifter Classic 4 as per my avatar. It's bloody brilliant and was basically brand new. Not a mark on it. I can't fault it at all and much prefer it to anything else I played in the guitar shops in my area. There's no way I could have convinced myself (let alone the wife) to pay the $1400 asking price for one new. Right place, right time........ and Auction Sniper. I'm not bagging Fenders. They are great instruments but I don't like P bass necks and I don't like Jazz single coil pickups. With the Godin I got the best of both worlds without the stratospheric price that American Fender's demand over here. I think I got the Godin so cheap as they are not well known over here at all.

Yes, now they are MIM and white with blue pinstripes and a West Ham soccer team logo on it. Not a fan, but that's it
