Fender Bassman 100T - chapter 2

well, your epifani is no slouch by any means. Make sure you like the sound of 12's before making decision. they are different. How did your recent session go?

Great, hope to have the album done by end of July. We have some guitar overdubs and a few vocals to still record + mixing. Of course, the head sounded great on the studios Ampeg 810.

Yeah, I wish I could side by side compare, but that is not going to happen. I may have to take a flier on one vs the other and hope I like it. The Epifani is a nice cab, but I find it sounds best with a more modern head, like my GK 1001RB II. I don't care for it as much with the Fender or my Mesa Walkabout. I thought the head had more life with the NEO 610 I tried it with at Bass Central.

Well, after reading a lot on here and after gigging extensively with my 100T, I've just received in the post a set of Winged C tubes and new JJ pre amp Tubes to give my 100T a new set of goodies.

I'll install later today.

Also people.... I have a couple of questions you other 100T and Fender 410 Neo (610 or 810) users can answer:

1.
What are people generally running the Tube Bias setting on? Middle, hotter or colder?

2.
Are you fender Neo cab users using the tweeter and at what setting?

I know this will sound lame, but after gigging with the 100T for over a year now, I've personally never moved the bias from the normal setting, even to just see what it would sound like. The rig's getting the exact sound I envisioned when I sprung for it. The tweeter level on my 410Neo lives around 10:00 - 11:00.

Really thinking about the winged C's as well.

You know, I have not messed with the bias either. I need to give it a try.

I keep the bias on the middle setting as well. I've dabbled with the other bias settings but after switching to JJs for all tubes, I really haven't felt compelled to work with the other settings.

As for the Neo's, I use 2 1x15s with the tweeters zeroed out. We're going for a very vintage sound in this band.

I haven't tweaked the bias settings either. i keep it on Normal and am quite happy with the tones. After experimenting with different tweeter settings, I find that it's not making much of a difference with all the racket we're producing on stage, so now I just leave it at High Noon

I replaced the 12AX7 tubes with a couple of 1960 NOS Sylvania/Baldwins. Also went with the Winged C 6L6s. Big improvement. Sounds punchier with more girth, if you know what I mean. I have an NOS Mullard to go in the 12AT7 spot, but so far haven't been able to coax the original GT AT7 out of its hole. That thing is half buried and the GT is oversized for an AT7. Seriously tight fit in that insulating ring. Might be a job for my amp tech.

I haven't touched the bias settings, either. I might fool around with them one of these days, but right now I really don't have the need.

Speaking of tubes, this link was in another thread regarding which GT tubes are made by which manufacturer. Interesting.

The 6L6s I pulled out of my 100T are GT 6L6 GCs (which are not listed on that chart) and the 12AX7s are GT-12AX7-R.

So last night I pulled out the groove tubes and put in my new Winged C power tubes and then three new JJ pre amp tubes.
Just from testing at home it sounded amazing, but I'm playing a gig tonight so it will have a proper run.

New DR Hi Beams on my Ric and the whole thing sounded fantastic and Grrrr :bassist:

Looking forward to your review of it with the new tubes!

a few pages back there was some mention of the 100t getting pretty hot. I know on mine the switches get so hot that I can barely touch them. so I'm wondering, would there be any harm in turning the amp upside down and using it that way? it would seem like some of the heat would rise... away from the chassis. hopefully someone out there may know if there are concerns about the effects of the flip.
thanks for reading.

Tube amps run hot. I wouldn't worry about it at all. There is a fan if needed, but the old Bassmans used to get plenty hot with no fan and there are still plenty of them going fine. I left mine on for a couple of days a while ago in the heat of our summer without realising it, the back panel was pretty hot to touch but everything still goes fine.
Just play the thing - it is like a new Harley, just get on and thrash it :D

They do get hot, very hot, but it's normal and fine. Don't worry about it and certainly no need to turn upside down.

So.... last nights gig was great with the new tubes:
(Svetlana Winged C 6L6's and JJ valves for the pre-amp section)

It was great, sounded clearer, still get that growl which is so important but but just seemed to sing more!

The amp was amazing before with the groove tubes, but after reading reviews on the winged C's and reading that GT valves are kinda the bottom of the range, I decided to treat the amp to quality it deserves.

I Know what I'll be using from now on. I'm happy. Plus if anyone has never tried DR Hi-Beam strings, you should. I spent years and years and years switching between strings and these are so good for a rock stainless steel sound but no where near as horrible and rough to touch as other SS strings. Very flexible. I've found my ideal setup now.

Here's a pic of my setting from last night. I generally use the vintage channel, but switch to the overdrive for certain songs that need loads of dirt.

These are my usual settings (the treble pot of the vintage channel is pulled out), apart form I usually have the vintage channel volume on 6.5 rather than 6.

Guitars are Ric 4003 and Ric4001's with DR Hi Beams and no effects apart form a big muff on occasion.

Hi, guys!

I'm a convert too. I tried one in a store and fell in love with it. Now I've sold my gear to be able to afford the Fender Bassman 100t and a matching cab - and guess what: the same store sold the amp I tried before I was able to buy it and now can't get more! Really?!

Are they seriously out of stock at the moment? At least that's the answer I got. They said the amps are impossible to get here in Europe and don't have a date when they'll get more either.

Some luck: sold my gear and now can't buy the gear I really want.
