Fender La Cabronita Precision Bass

I did notice the fender version of this lacks a body contour which for me is a no go, but the squier does have the body contour which is a must have IMO. Difference? probably the bridge and tuners. P/U looks same. Basswood body versus alder? My classic vibe 60's P has basswood. Tone seems "tighter" and more resonant in the lows. BTW basswood is the only tree in the forest that when struck produces an audible note ( a county forester told me that) , and the MM bongo is basswood so it is used on high end instruments as well. Might have to try one out.:bassist:

I've actually thought the same thing- the features that the Squier has are, overall, more suited to me than the Fender.

The pickup is slightly further back on the Squier, how much of a difference this would actually make in a mix is beyond me though.

I would prefer the Fender, specifically for its lack of body contour.

Hello everyone,

Do you know if these mods are actually possible with original fender parts?
I mean, is the body profile/neck joint/size and everything, the same as the standard 51 precision? Then a 51 pickguard would fit.

Also did anyone change the tuner machines or even install a D-tuner on it?

That's something a luthier can fix somehow, I think.
I'd like to be sure the size of the 51 pickguard matches with body profile first.

I asked that cause being vintage reverse gears you should go for a special matching d-tuner. What hipshot model would you install?

It would also be cool routing a normal split coil in place of the fidelitron pickup.

I dunno... I feel like the whole point of having something different is for it to be, well,... different! No?

That's such a TB thing, lol: "I'm looking for something different than a P-Bass that I can then mod until it's a P-Bass." ;)

Ahahahahahah I know, it just seems to me a good way to get a vintage fender P51 design with more modern features like CAR and PJ configuration maybe, using a mass produced platform.
Also, big stores usually do not stock hipshot BT3s here in Europe, that's why the easiest solution could be change the entire set and go for the usual BT7, BT8 or the Schaller compatible one.

I had some of the same tuners around, only they were nickel-plated, so I threw them on instead of the stock ones, which I thought were chrome-plated. That was the only mod I made to mine, other than that Fender is sending me the correct pickup, as mine was accidentally built with a guitar pickup. Not that I mind, but I want to hear what the difference will really be.
Thought about putting a standard bridge on so I could put on a bridge cover, but I like the bridge that's on there.
I although these do seem like great mod platforms, and I agree that it's tempting, I bought mine not just for the comfy neck, but because it's also different. I just need a black pickguard to go with the black bass.

This is exactly what I would want to do with this bass. Put the '51 style pickguard on, replace that bridge with a vintage one, and put '51 bridge and pup covers and control plate on too. On that red it would look sweet IMO....if it would work. The tuners I would leave alone...I love the vintage style reverse kind.

Yes, that would look great.
I'm not sure the original reissue P51 pickguard would fit though.
We don't know what template they are using for the Cabronita body.
I read of people who couldn't fit a 51RI pickguard on the Mike Dirnt signature (which at first sight might look similar).

Only someone who has a spare 51 pickguard and a MIM cabronita can tell us. Or fender.
(other option could be a custom pickguard, but too much hassle unless you know someone who can do the job)

It's likely that a custom '51 style guard would have to be cut to make it fit properly. There are people I know who could do it though. It just depends on whether you would want to take the time and money to have it done. If I owned one I would go ahead and have it done. But that's just me. We all know people who have modded their basses far more that what we are talking about.:D
