Fender Rumble Club

How do you guys feel about running a preamp pedal through the return jack (without the send jack) on the effects loop? Do you feel like you lose some of the rumble's magic, or can you still get a good clean rumble tone? In other words what do you think happens to the rumble's tone coloring? Oh, and is the delta comp still in play when you do this?

i just ran this last night, put my SWR Grand Prix into the Return jack of my 500c along with the 115 extension cab and it sounded really, really good! Got quite a few compliments on my tone and had plenty of power for the 125 capacity venue.

I have the 200cV3 I love it! I did add a the 210 cab and wow! Really love it!View attachment 4308360
Nice! I’m more interested in a pair of combos. Idea being to use one at home and another at rehearsal space then use both at gigs. I can run stereo outs from the reverb pedal at the end of my board

You don’t even need to run stereo outs (you could to get the stereo reverb effect of course), with the Rumbles you can run a cable from Send to Return of the other one and it will act as a slave, get full power from the second amp but the first amp runs all the controls.

Well...yes and no. The 200c puts out(max)140W through the internal 15" spkr. If you run an extension spkr, you get 200W split between the 2. If you got a second 200c and daisy chain them, you'll get(potentially)280W. I've never had the VOLUME past 'noon' on my 200c so maybe 80+W(?)x2. I have run an extension spkr(R112)and the sound was fuller, but I actually hadda turn the VOLUME down a bit lest I be too loud for the room. I've also daisy chained the 200c>R100. So, basically, 240W(max).
EDIT: FWIW, I never have (and never will) dimed an amp.

Yes, as you can see in the block diagram below, the Delta-Comp is still in play when bypassing the pre-amp like that. But, you do lose the magic of the actual Rumble Gain, Drive, Bright, Vintage & Contour voices, and EQ, so of course you can't truly get the "real" Rumble tone, accept for the Cab sim and actual cab tone. Your pedal will be supplying its own magic, instead.

That’s definitely another option. I’m used to using 700-900 watt amps so I’m concerned about the ability for two 200 combos to be enough. I prefer the tone of the 200s over the 500s

Well, 2 questions. 1)how much of the 8-900W are you using? B)are you going through PA/FOH? if you are, how much 'stage monitor' do you need?

Right, i guess i didn’t mean FULL power, but the full internal power of both amps.
And i don’t believe i have either, guitar amps i did back when i played that. But last night at my gig, my pre-amp’s Master was at 9 o’clock going int my 500c with 115 extension-had it at 11 o’clock at rehearsal the night before then we decided to drop the overall stage volume. I was also running a DI to front of house, so the amp is really just my monitor and so ambiance sound into the vocal mics (as the sound guy told me when i suggested moving my rig a little and he protested).

I seem to lose a lot of volume when I go through the return jack... is this normal?

I think the relative volumes (& tones) could depend somewhat on the relative levels of gain & EQ of the Rumble pre-amp compared to that of whatever pedal(s) are involved. Plus, the pedal gain added to the Rumble pre-amp gain, when not going straight to the Return jack, may account for a good part of the difference.

Yeah I only lose volume when I go straight into the return. I guess the preamp and EQ add that much gain?

It does. That is what a preamp for.

Note, that most preamp pedals are not actually amplify but only "color" the signal. So the level of the signal is not really amplified (what a preamp actually is for).

This video is really informative about this topic

Just FYI, I used my Fender Rumble 100 combo very happily for a few years. When the pandemic hit and all available gigs were outdoors, I started worrying about whether 100 was enough in wide-open spaces, so I started taking my Aguilar TH350 and a MarkBass 2x10. I still love that combination, but it's two pieces to carry and the MB cab is heavier than the Rumble.

Decided to try the Rumble at an outdoor party over the weekend on what must have been almost an acre of land. It was absolutely fine for my upright in an acoustic, drummerless trio. I used very little Gain, never turned the Volume past 12:00, and guests reported that the mix was just fine.

Bottom line: For the gigs we have coming up this summer, I'm going to take the Rumble just because it's so dependable and lightweight. If it's not up to the task at any time, I'll let you know.

I started with a R200c in 2015. It has served me well in all kinds of situations. I later bought a 100. It has-or would have-covered almost all the other gigs I've done with my 'regular' band(2 guitars, drums, me)playing for a 60+y/o audience that doesn't like LOUD. To illustrate, we usually use 2 Bose L1's for PA and they aren't turned up much. I've said b4 that if I'd been aware of the daisy chaining trick, I'd have gotten 2 R100's, used both when needed(rarely)or 1 most of the time.
Side note: good to hear from you, Bob. Just outta curiosity, do you still have the ebony Epi EB-3 I sold you? Have a good gig-filled summer.

Sounds like our gigs and audiences are similar. We are by no means a loud bar band and do best with smaller, quieter venues like concerts, restaurants, coffee houses or tasting rooms.

You might be thinking of another Bob because I've never owned an EB-3 and the only Epiphone I've ever had was a Jack Casady.

So wait. @GonePlaid . What did you just say here about Dailey chaining the rumbles?! I’m new here to the Rumble club. So if I have say two rumbles 100s I can daisy chain them and have a 200 watt stack?
Yup. I 'learned' about it in Rumble club, but it's mentioned in the 'book of words' that comes with any Rumble of 100, 200, or 500 watts. The Rumble Club wiki describes it really well, but in a nutshell, stack 2 R100's, run a guitar cord from EFFECTS SEND of one to EFFECTS RETURN of the other. All EQ is controlled by the first amp (MASTER) and bypasses the preamp section of the second (SLAVE) straight into the amp section. So in effect you have a 200W, 2x12" stack.
I have done a few gigs where a 2xR100 stack was provided by the BL. Saweeet.
