Just used my ears as judgement. On those faitly low volumes we usually play, it seems to help, but picking a couple mms forwards/back on a string can make more difference. It is just feels more "forgiving". Also EQ-ing properly is a must.
Guess stopping standing waves inside a cab is generally a good idea.
Stuffing usually makes cabs "seem" bigger as air needs to travel longer before decaying/getting out.
At those relatively low volumes we play, I dont't think it could damage anything. Idea was that the ports usually allow cabs to make low end air pressure more easilly, mids/highs should? project from the cone face anyways. But theese are not scientific experiments from me, just observations.
Also, it feels like turning master past 1 or 2 does not make a ton more sound pressure, but gives more sustain, sound is more compressed and there are more overtones.
