NCD! Rumble 40.
It's been a while since I posted anything. Life has been busy, lol. But I noodle away on the bass when I make the time.
The Studio 40 has been a disappointment. I had buyers regret with it and never got over it. It's only my buzzy ears, but it doesn't sound as good and full as a regular 40c.
I considered moving up to a bigger combo and looked around for used, and even new are not easy to always find! A 200c was the wish but a 100c would be good. Then I made a mistake of going to see a Squier P 40th VE (OMG what a beautiful and simply silky smooth beast! But I digress). There was a 40 there for me to plug into and I enjoyed both the bass and the tone through that setup. I know they have a Studio 40 there and moved it beside the 40c to compare, and again I get that bland tone I never seemed to dial out of my own Studio 40.
I put the P back on the rack (still thinking about it, lol) and went home to fidget with my Studio 40 some more and still feel it's bland.
Today I found a shop 30 minutes away that had the 100c, 40c and the Ampeg RB110 in stock! Drove over and they have a great little auditioning room They left me alone as long as I wanted with the 3 combos. Started on the 40 and felt right at home with the tone, setting my ear to the room and the store's Sire P5. Next onto the 100c and it was good but boomy on lows and not as articulate on the highs. Then onto the RB110 and it was pure vanilla. Did everything well and but no character or soul. Back to the 100c and the richness of the Rumble was instant (yep, it has different coloring of the tone). I messed with it and found a tone I liked. Then back onto the 40c and it was like going home. No need to find a tone, it feels like a wide palette to my ears. Messing with it felt like exploring new paths more than trying to make my ears happy. Sold!

Conclusion: get what sounds best to you! lol.

I use my o/d all the time-as MUTE.

I have an inline tuner on my pedal board which I use to mute...but that's a good idea.

It’s a nice OD, but I find it more useful as a mute, too. Which idea I ran across here, probably because of your posting.

I can almost get away with my R40 for a lotta our gigs, but I like the extra headroom of the R100.

Got the Fender Rumble 800 combo. I had another amp that distorted with the gain low and very weak pickups. I bought the floor model at the shop I went to after my short experience with it. The guy at the counter told me there was a new 800 after I asked about the Rumble 500. I went to check it out and, keep in mind, I've only played bass a year and had no real experience with larger amps. So I go to the floor model which is on an elevated platform, I plug in a bass, and I turned the volume to about 8 and played a note. Everything on the platform shook and the guys across from me immediately whipped their heads over and I said "my bad". It was the cleanest and loudest bass note I played to that point. I didn't try anything else. I used it in my audition for the band I'm in now and they complimented the tone. After about 5 on the volume knob everything becomes extremely detailed and never loses punch. I only had to turn it up to 6 for my audition. I see this, and I'm sure the 500 as well, taking a bassist anywhere they want to go.

If you ever need more power, just get the Rumble 115 cabinet!! The difference is other-worldly! I do realize, the 200 is so fantastic on its own, it is hard to fathom. Most of the time I just use the 200 alone, but I have the 115 also. The first time I plugged it into my 200, I just thought "Bob Marley" even though I don't play any of his stuff. The 200 is my favorite bass amp of all-time.

Been thinking of getting a cab for my 200 combo. Was considering the 210 but the 115 is cheaper. My guitar player uses a vintage Musicmaster bass amp which puts out a whopping 12 W. Sounds great but if he can get away with that the 200 combo should be enough.

The extension cab is a tempting tone enhancement, Warry. But, as you've said, if the guitarist is only using such a small amp, then an extension for you could be a bit of overkill.

On the other hand, life is short, get what you like!

I assume you're accustomed to playing with the amp turned down. Well, it can turn down a bit more with the extension!

I should have my new Rumble 100 tomorrow, to go with the one I already have. Ordered two 2 foot cables with 90 degree angles on both ends, so when I stack them, I can hook them together very neatly.

I had a Rumble 500C and 1X15 cabinet in the past, but given my current situation, even they proved to be more than I needed.

My R100 covers everything I do now nicely, and I figured if I ever needed a little extra, just hook up a second one. 200W out of 2X12, and if one amp dies, I can still function.

I believe so, Bob, yes. I've not had this confirmed from anyone, but the dimensions are the same, so it should work. I think I suggested a swap to a R500c owner and a RS800c owner, but never heard if they did it.

Meanwhile, there's a link at the bottom of the Rumble Summary Info section of the wiki to a Rumbler who swapped grilles between his RS40 and his R40.

My new Rumble 800 arrived today! My first new amp since 2004. Still love the little Boogie I bought back then (at the time it was the lighter/smaller option as I moved away from a 4x10 and SWR350 head), but the Fender is 22 pounds lighter and since I'm also almost 20 years older, that's significant. Don't know yet if it will replace the Boogie or be the spare or just an alternate for rehearsals, but damn, lighter is sure nice.
