Fender Rumble Club

I'm amazed at just how quiet (i.e. free of buzz or hum) my new R100 is. I often forget to turn it off. If I'm not playing, it is silent... and the part of my house where I play is quiet to begin with... really pleased.

I'm gradually figuring out the 4-band EQ and what an adjustment on each means to the sound... specifically, what move helps and which one diminishes.

Very pleased with the purchase.

joe, have you perused the Rumbles Frequencies Wiki with frequency graphs of what the EQ & voicing buttons do? It is a very visual guide to the various settings.

Was at the guy's gig I bought my second r100 from.
He got an r500 since :) Sounded great. He praised it when paired with his 15" or 4x10" cabs. (not needed for this club gig)

OK, my turn to ask a question...

I have a Rumble 200 and a Rumble 100, and I've been wondering about the difference in cabinet construction between the two. Especially the use of damping material and bracing in the various models.

Last weekend I "inadvertently" played a gig with my R100. it was a retirement party for one of our "band" members, held in a small tropical-beach-themed bar.
I (and the other band members) had been told by the "retiree" that the venue was very small, with a TINY 6x8' stage (we assumed INSIDE the bar), and we were asked not to bring all of our usual gear. I brought the R100, thinking this was the perfect opportunity to try it out at a gig.

Turned out that the "tiny stage" was actually a raised platform in the corner of a large OUTDOOR patio. We actually set up on the patio facing into a large open triple door, with the listeners INSIDE. So we were actually OUTSIDE, with plenty of setup room. I definitely would have brought the R200 If I'd known, but the R100 still got its chance... Worked fine, with no real problems, btw.

Anyway, while playing and handling the R100 I was struck by how different it sounded (and felt) from the R200. There was definitely some boxy/boomy coloration from the 100, that I hadn't really noticed when using it for the occasional low-key, moderate-level basement jams I bought it for.

When you lift and handle the 100 it really gives the impression of an empty lightweight plywood box (wonder why?). If I thump on the back and sides I hear a drum-like tone with a clear, definite musical pitch from each surface. Basically an E note (2nd fret D string) on the two sides, and a C note (3rd fret A string) on the back.

When I lift, handle and thump on the R200 it feels and sounds like it's much more solidly constructed. If I thump on the top, sides and back I get a higher-pitched "knock", like knocking on a wooden desk or windowsill. No definite pitch, and well damped.

So I've been wondering what is different about the construction of the two cabinets.

I've found lots of info, and pictures of, the internal construction of the R100 (that Wiki again...), but I've not been able to find ANY good info (on the TalkBass forums and others) about the construction of the R200 cab.

I know the R100 is an empty lightweight plywood box, with no damping.
The R200 seems to be built of the same lightweight plywood, but I would like to know the details of its "insides".
I don't want to take the speaker out of mine just to look inside. The speaker mounting screws are still good and tight, and everything is solid. Messing around taking it apart is just ASKING for trouble!
And I KNOW someone out there already knows (and has pics of?) what's IN there!

In the mean time, I laid the 200 on its back, and using a flashlight and mechanic's "mirror on a stick", tried to get a look through the ports.
I found something perplexing...

There is the expected damping material. It's a white Poly-fil type batting, about 1-1/2" thick, covering and attached to the back only. Top, back and sides bare wood, sealed at the joints like in the pics I've seen of the R100. No obvious bracing, but see below...

I was surprised to see that the batting covering the back is NOT just simply a flat piece.
The batting is folded into a large, vertical, central tube or "tunnel", about 5" in diameter, extending from the bottom surface towards the top. It looks sorta like this (a quick and dirty sketch of the amp viewed from the bottom, as if looking "through" it towards the top):

I can't get a better look into the cab through the ports with a mirror, but I'm wondering what, if anything, is inside that tunnel of batting!

The batting is glued to the back, and to the bottom where it's in contact with the wood. I don't want to tear it loose just to solve the mystery!

So, is there a vertical brace in there from top to bottom, or is the tunnel supposed to serve as a sort of sound baffle?
My inquiring mind wants to know!

It shows some sort of black, plastick-y flat lining (?), not white, and there is no "tunnel" or brace. There IS some sort of cubic-shaped "object" sitting on the bottom where the tunnel would be located, but doesn't look like anything I would expect to inhabit a bass cabinet.
(What the heck is it?). Here's the pic:

Anyway, my question is, does anyone know more about how the R200 cabinet is constructed? I don't think I see anything in mine that would explain why the R200 seems so much more solid and damped than the R100! Unless there's one heck of a brace in that tunnel!

Just hoping there are no TROLLS in there... ;)

Hi owning a Rumble 800 cabinet playing a Rickenbacker 4001 over it.
Will add a speaker combo. Shall I buy a 15 inch or a 2x 10 inch?

Hoi, Soer! @Erik Soer, you are now member #1860 in the Fender Rumble Club. Congratulations and welcome to TalkBass in general and The Club in particular. Put that number in your TalkBass Signature for safe keeping. Then make yourself at home here and on your Rumble Club Wiki page, the repository of all Rumbling wisdom and knowledge.

Erik, the Rumble 210 cab can definitely take the 400 watts that the Rumble 800 can dish out, since it has the same speakers as in the Rumble Stage 800 combo. But the Rumble 115 is only rated at 300 watts, why even the venerable Fender Bassman 115 is only rated 350 watts! Plus the 210 speakers are a closer match for getting that magical "cab coupling effect" with enhanced tonal and harmonic enrichment!

So, how's about telling us a bit about yourself, Erik, such as your bass experience in general and your Rumble journey in particular? You'll fit right in here since we have all kinds. But we all love to ... ... ...

Kenny, I'm surprised to hear that only one of the six internal sides of your 200 has the acoustic damping material on it. I thought I'd read that at least 2 sides had it. Hmm! And I don't have any idea what the "tunnel" is about, unless the installer just cut too wide a piece. Anyhow, I doubt it makes any significant sonic difference than if it didn't have a "tunnel".🤔

And you should know that the 200 cab is the exact same dimensions as the R500 combo which, as I'm sure you know, can pump out 350 hard-thumpin' watts by itself. So, for economy of manufacturing, I'm sure both the 200 & 500 cabs are built to the same sturdiness with just different baffle boards. Therefore, yes, the 200's cab needs to be super strong just in case it gets used for a 500 instead! 😉

That's my theorized answer to your questions, until any empirical evidence proves me wrong. 🤗

The "tunnel" is definitely sized and shaped the way it is for some purpose. It isn't just a large wrinkle!

It is symmetrical in shape from the bottom to where it appears to end at a bare wooden side-to-side cross-bar near the top. Like a tube or tunnel. I can't really see up there with my mirror.

It's also glued to the wood bottom, or to some surface inside the tunnel, in a way that helps it to keep that shape.

I poked it a few times with the mirror, and it doesn't seem to be empty. Not just loose batting. Something's inside. :oops:

Now I'm fantasizing that maybe it's hiding some sort of sophisticated high-tech tube-shaped "wave trap"... 😃

It is interesting how the speaker size is engraved into sonic fingerprint of the cabs, i.e., between the two lines' X driver x 10s have tonal/response similarities, the 12s have similarities, and the 15s have similarities. It sure seems that speaker size matters. Philip Conrad does nice work.

The videos I cited were more focused on the differences of speaker sizes, but Ampeg was the platform. The second video might be notably helpful to Rumblers deciding between the Rumble 200 or 500 as the single 15 has a much different presentation to the audience than a multiple 10 does, with a 2 x 12 being sonically between the 10s or 15 but closer to a 15.

On the one hand, size indeed matters. On the other hand, he was mic'ing just the speakers, not the cabinets. Two cabinets with identical speakers but different sizes, dimensions, and sealed/port characteristics can sound radically different. It would be interesting to have that done as well.

I did line both my r100s, the second one looks like this now:



I think the r100 has a more bottom ended sound to begin with, sometimes I got to drasticly use the bass EQ knob to tame them (even below 9o'clock). There is nothing wrong with using the EQ.
A lowpass filter or any EQ would also work.

Boom "lives" somewhere in the 50-120Hz range, that's where You can "fix" it.

Not to mention it matters a LOT where You stand in the room (freqs "building up" or "cancel out" in that exact spot).

Some rooms (specially cube/square-like in shape) are usually hard to work with.
