Fender Rumble Club

Hi everyone,
I have a Rumble 800 Combo and would like to pair it with a Rumble 115 cabinet.
Given the different dimensions of the 115, can i use it turned on its short side (adding appropriate rubber feet) so as to have the same width as the Rumble 800?
I imagine someone has tried...

Thanks

Ciao, Harri! @Harris74, you are now member #1861 in the Fender Rumble Club. Congratulations and welcome. Put that number in your TalkBass Signature for safe keeping. Then make yourself at home here and on your Rumble Club Wiki page, the repository of all Rumbling wisdom and knowledge.

Yeah, Har, you can turn the R800c on its side to match the width of a Rumble 115 or 410, (and I would recommend it to be the 500-watt 410 instead of the 300-watt 115 since the R800c could easily send it 400-watts!). It would look like this from the Extension Cabinets section of your Rumble Wiki:

Assuming you DIDN'T mean flipping the 115 like this:

So, how about telling us a bit about yourself, Harri, such as your bass experience in general and your Rumble journey in particular? You'll fit right in here since we have all kinds. But we all love to ... ... ...

Rumble On!

Hate to disagree with the BigDog, but as long as they don't EQ in extreme low frequencies or drive the combo super hard, the 1x15 should be fine.
400W output is fairly likely not to happen under normal use (since that is the max RMS power available) and short bursts (which most music is) is very much less likely to damage the 1x15.
If you do use it, just don't abuse it!

Lots of people use that 1x15 with the R800c.

[~ DISCLAIMER!!! ~]
I would not blame anyone for wanting to be careful though, especially if you are new to using a powerful amp.
Better to be safe than sorry and all that, blah, blah, blah.

You make a valid point, John. I could be wrong but, I've been warning 800-watt Rumblers away from the 300-watt R115 cab since 2018, 7 years ago!, when the Stage 800 first came out; then the 800 HD head in 2019; then the non-modeling R800c in 2022! Yet, I truthfully don't recall ANYONE admitting here that their R115 cab was blown by an R800 of any kind!! 🙄

I mean, I'm a firm believer that the R210 cab, rated 350-watts on paper, can easily handle 400-watts from any R800 because it's the same exact speakers as are actually in the 400-watt standalone Stage 800 combo itself!!! Exacto - same-o! Henceforth, the R210 is unequivocally 400-watt worthy. Period. Exclamation point! 🧐

So, I gotta admit that, maybe, just maybe, the 300-watt R115 cab is even more conservatively rated and really CAN handle 400-watts, also! I say this now against my gut feeling against such blatant scoffing of published specs, as evidenced by my many warnings, but this suspicion has been haunting my conscience for quite some time now. Call me G-Chicken Little, if you must. 🐓 But it was done with only good intentions (you know, like that paving material to the nether world?) in hopes of saving Rumblers a self-damaging stack. Forgive me, please, if this warning has been in vane. Mea culpa. 😇

I do believe in warning people of the risks, so you did your duty.

I think I'm a risk-taker by nature.
I used to run a 1.6kW power amp into various bass cabinets, so I'm probably not someone to take amp advice from.
I blew a HF driver one time, by hitting the strings of my StingRay 5 against the pickup pole pieces while I was playing a live gig at a rather large venue.
That was not a pretty sound!
... but I've never blown a woofer!

I've been gigging my 800HD head into two 115 V3 cabs (300w), for about a year now. On paper, the head overpowers the specs of the speakers, yes. But IRL use, I've never had any problems or signs of speaker distress whatsoever.

There's no way I could get anywhere near giving it full power from the head. Those custom Eminence drivers are pretty efficient & get loud, fast. They definitely make the most out of every watt they're given.

Plus, increasing the speaker area in general is going to move more air and reduce the need to turn up quite so high, as opposed to asking a single speaker cab to carry all the weight.

IMO, a 2x10/115 setup should also work just fine.

Loving my rig.

Beauty!
Are you still using this set up?
Also, do you use the Black Panel pedal as a stompbox/preamp going straight into the input or do you run it through the effects loop?
Hi, digby! Do you have a Rumble, or considering to get one?
Yep, I have the 500 combo and the 40 to use for practice

Do you use any pedals with your R500c, ben? If so, do you plug 'em into (A) the input, (B) the FX Loop, using both Send & Return, or (C) just the FX Return, completely bypassing the Rumble's preamp? I'm not a pedal-user myself, and I haven't noticed whether the pedal-using Rumblers here have a preference, or not. Maybe that would be a good poll-based thread for a knowledgeable pedal-Rumbler here to start?!? But, remember to include the all-important "Carrots" poll choice. 🙄

So, diggy-benny, how about telling us a bit about yourself, such as your bass experience in general and your Rumble journey(s) in particular? You're bound to fit right in here since we have all kinds. But we all love to ... ... ...

Oh hey, thank you! Member # 1862 ... wow ... I'm pretty sure that's the year my forefathers immigrated here from Germany!
Seriously I appreciate the welcome!

I've been playing bass since 1994 or so, I've been with the same group of guys now for 30+ years. It was the same old story ... a "promising local band" that never made it! Maybe it's because I never used effect pedals?
Outside of Boss tuners I have never dived into Bass pedal effects. I did get the original SansAmp bass driver (the one without the mid control) and loved that for recording and going direct on stage. But outside of that I always tried to work with the amp's tone as is -- I figured it has all those knobs, they must do something!! ;-)

I think I've got to the point now where I really want just a beautiful old-school Motown bass tone ... a mo-tone if you will. This 64 Black Panel got me interested ... although I still don't know if I shoudl go direct into the input or effect loop it.

Try them both and use the one that you like best. Seriously. There is no one correct answer for every situation or bassist.

I'll note that a basic Epiphone Thunderbird IV or Classis Pro straight into a Rumble 100 (or maybe with a little compression first) can cop a great Motone.

Hey I appreciate the suggestion ... Epiphone Thunderbird? Man I never considered one of those. I did have the Epiphone Viola years ago (their Hofner copy) and freaking loved it, so I can image how good their Thunderbird would be. Do they still have the Gibson neck dive?

As for input path, I think I've heard that you use the effect loop with something like the 64 Black Panel pedal if you want to bypass the preamp stage of a combo bass amp (Like Rumble 500) and just go straight to the power amp. So would that imply if you just connect the pedal straight into the amp's input that the pedal preamp would fight with the Rumble preamp?

Since there's no correct answer as you said I'll just try them both when the pedal gets here and see for myself.
Thanks again for the info!

Nah, no battle. Let us know!

Neck dive depends on the bass, the strap, the player. Of my six (4 Epi, 2 Greco), only the VP and 64 (giant headstocks) tend to dive much, and on all of them a good strap run across the front from the lower peg keeps them steady.

Off topic, I know, but it sounds like you no longer have the Viola. I tried one in a local shop once, a few years back, and was MIGHTY impressed with it. I kinda regret I didn't buy it, but oh well. You know how that goes.

If you try going into the instrument input, just start with both gain controls low until you decide how the gain staging works the best - full, punchy tone with the least amount of audible distortion.
