"Fenderbird"

"....What's the deal with that SLADE road case behind the bass?"

Knowing just alittle about Mr G.O.T.59 I can tell you he's a most loyal fan of Slade, surpassing even my great love for that band.

Which shop was that, tapper?

Chicago Guitar & Amplification in Lincoln Square. It's a couple of the guys who previously worked at Rock N Roll Vintage (also in Lincoln Square) started their own shop - Chad & Matt. Good guys, great service.

The Fenderbird was a dark cherry-burst (IIRC) Epi body w/ a maple P bass neck from All-Parts I believe he said. This was back in May or June, so I can hardly remember exactly. Played awesome though!

Cool! That sounds like a great Fenderbird.

I've been meaning to get to RnR Vintage, but I always forget--now I've got a second place to go right there, thanks!

Yeah, they don't sell anything at Chicago Guitar & Amplification - just a shop, but R&R Vintage has a hell of a selection of guitars and amps. I think they had about 5 basses last time I checked...they also have an Ebay store.

That one looks great! Is it a squier bullet bass neck you used?
I have a epi tb i never play manly for the uncomfortable neck, so i am really thinking about doing a Fenderbird aswell?

Did the neck fit in there directy and what body is it?

The neck pocket/heel is identical to any other fender P/J bass.

The neck is one of my all time favorite fender necks, its a
USA fender bullet bass deluxe neck, they are very unique,.

Here is what a usa bullet bass deluxe neck consists of,.

B width P-bass neck. CHECK.
Tiny vintage size frets. CHECK.
Hard V profile CHECK
Downsized Tele headstock with fender stamped tuners that are direct fit for stingray tuners (coffin shaped backing plates) Check.

GREATTTT Neck, and very unique in feel.

the bass in general was great, with the double quarter pounder P pups and 18volt Bart 2band preamp it was a loud aggressive monster,.

Just the balance and LONG stretch killed me, it was rediculous. I sold that bass on ebay so its out there somewhere..
Warmoth needs to rework the neckpocket in their T-bird bodies, and for F*ck's Sake MAKE A REVERSE BODY!
they would sell like hotcakes man...

Cool, thanks, that's about what I guessed. RS' basses look great, but you're the first owner I've run across.
Roy and Scott are great to deal with, for not as much as you might think they can build you just what you want. The Expbird I own is one of two protos they made to test the market. Mine sounds just like you would expect. Fit and finish are excellent. The neck is truly amazing. for those of us who have tried to get nice low action on a mass produced bass it can be a challenge. Not this bass, super low no buzzing, just amazing. I have a number of bases built by independent luthiers. They are a far more rewarding instrument to play than off the shelf basses.

My favorite Fender-bird

Like the bass, My first build in '79 was an Explorer body with a P neck and the first set of EMG P pups shipped to NY. BUT....What's the deal with that SLADE road case behind the bass?
Very observant Grasshopper. I am a big Slade fan is all I am going to say.

Here's the one I built.

As you can tell from the pictures I screwed up the pickup allignment. But I rectified that and it looks and sounds really powerful.

The innards of that big pickup, as you can see, it's actually a P-Bass pickup in a large rectangular casing. The Pickup itself probably came from an old Ibanez Roadstar bass.

I'm now thinking about making a fretless one

Quite possibly :)! I have a Westone Spectrum GT Bass (also from the Matsumoko factory in Japan) and that has a similar pickup arrangement, with one P and one double-J pickup in rectangular housings.

Sorry, nothing to do with Fenderbirds really, but I don't have one, so this is the only contribution I could make :hmm:.

There's certainly a great deal of variety in pickup selection in your custom basses here folks. Makes a nice change from P, J or MM ;).

Well yeah but you've got one fact wrong here: Matsumoku never made Ibanez, they always came from the Fuji-gen factory.
