if it's taking the easy road, i'd like to see anyone here on TB make it big in the rap genre...

50 Cent is hardly 'big in the rap genre'.

He's big in the 'pop genre', but the true Hip Hop crowd don't give him the time of day. He's famous because of the way he's marketed. Same as N'Sync.

All I'm saying is don't equate success with quality. Mainly because its a redundant argument.

hey guyz this is slipknotz.
I thank you for all of your opinions about Fieldy, Shavo, and Paul. They are some of my fav bass players. I like Geddy Lee and Geezer Butler. The reason i wanted to get opinions was to see how agressive the members were. my instructor after i told him i posted this thread he was like: "Dude they are gonna eat you to pieces and spit you out on the ground". SO i guess he's right.


Whatever I tried being nice. Keep it hard and kepp Rockin"!!!

P.S.: im not a crybaby becuz i know half you f***ers are gonna call me that.

out of curiosity, who is your teacher?

and btw, liking Fieldy, Shavo and all the others that get put down on TB (see Hoppus, Mark) isn't a bad thing. Just so long as you know that as far as technique goes, there are some far better players, and a lot that are worse!

i still stand by what i said...50 cent could be big in pop, but he isn't lacking in quality imo, but he is lacking in what you and I both see as quality.

First of all, some of these "Bass Players" and "Rappers", honestly, ain't got NO TALENT!! Here's my "Dos Centavos", Quote " You can hype a steamin' turd". Spin it and tell people that "It's the next big thing", after awhile, they'll buy into it. Folk's nowadays just won't take the time to listen cause they don't want to invest the time (think Jazz, 'Trane, Cannonball, Miles'- ol'school R&B, not "Boy Band shi*, Fusion, the list goes on, and on....) I know it's a new day, and things morph from one another( Jazz to Jazz fusion as one example), but seems things got worser than better!

BUUUUUT all this aside, Paul Grey has probably THE greatest metal bass tone. I can't stand a lot of Slipknot, but damn that dude has huge tone on their newer stuff.

I feel sorry for all these people who say that they can't hear the bass in bands like Slipknot.

As bass players, you should be able to hear it better than most people!

Ouch. My interest in bass has nothing to do with my sketchy ear. Some days I can nail licks I hear, and on others, I can't even hear the bass in the recordings I'm listening to.

And besides- they ARE tuned low.

Funny you should ask Senor Jackal... I wouldn't normally have noticed, but my friends had this video game where you were on a rocketship, and you flew around, and depending on the "track" your jet was on, you added to a song. It was all these techno songs, and a few Nu Metal songs... a newer Slipknot and a newer Papa Roach song. Not my style at all.

But There would be times while flying around on a spaceshiip that the guitars would be gone, and it was just bass and drums... then I realized how HUGE his tone is. I swear. Maybe it was just that one song, but I remeber thinking... "Man, that is awesome bass tone... I still don't like Slipknot though."

I hate to keep bringing this up, but do a search on SOAD. That's quite a battle. Seems you love em or hate them. I like exactly 1 song, the rest I find totally annoying. Still nobody has told me what that tapeworm crap is all about. Is that art?

but bobbo, what about before jazz?
it sounds like you are saying everything started with jazz and got worse from there...
when jazz first came out, a lot of people thought it was a horrible perversion of music (kinda what people think of SOAD and Korn) and that it will never hit it big...plus, looking at where you started in jazz history, you are leaving almost 50 years out...i recall a lot of people hating Bebop when it first came out...what about benny goodman? was talent in music just one bell curve with 50's-60's jazz being the pinnicle? I'm sorry if i am misunderstanding you, but i can't infer too much just looking at text on a webpage.
in the end, people aren't invincible to momentum. People 99% of the time resist change. When new music comes out, its almost a natural instinct to put down that new music, because gosh darnit, i like what i am listening to now! look at TV...nobody thought that would catch on, but it did, and now are we better off then when we were? ok, maybe bad example but look at the internet...a lot of people didn't think that that was such a great idea, but i can honestly say i wouldn't know as much as i do now without it...fact is, change is inevitable! jazz fusion came from rock and jazz, and look at such players like Jaco and Stanley and tell me that they couldn't give those bebop'ers a run for their money...

That's exactly right, and now backed up with science.

Personally, I went through a brief Korn phase in high school. Then I grew up and realized they're pretty awful. I can rub my guitar on a table, and hit a piece of wood with a chain, but that doesn't mean I should make a whole song based around that sound.
Whatever floats your boat, though.
