Finally Played One and It Was Terrifying. ;)

If you want the tone of a sealed 810, then you should consider the Ampeg. Nothing sounds quite like them. The fEarful is a totally different thing altogether. If you're just buying an 810 for volume, then there are many better options, including the fEarful.

If you want to argue semantics of analogies.....start a fEarful thread!!!!!!! ;)

Troll much?

Do you? ;)

Sorry fellas, I just have a dry sense of humor. It's hard to understand for those that.......don't. I found humor the the analogy debate; sue me.

That said, Comparing the sealed 810 to a fEarful (or any full range, three way cabinet) is a bit on the absurd side. They have vastly different tones and serve bassist with different needs. Some people enjoy the tone and visual impact of the 810. Others prefer full range, lightweight cabinets. And a bunch of bassists fall somewhere in the middle.

I jumped on the 3- way wagon long ago, when you could count the fEarful owners on this board with one hand (actually, way before that if you count my Acme). The design works great for me, but I don't pretend that it's great for everyone.

Back to your regularly scheduled truck / Bimmer debate..... ;)

The old Ampeg fridge is the point of reference for so many folks (many of whom have never tried any 3 way cabs), to me it's just a starting point for what the possibilities are. Personally, since I've been playing greenboy cabs any time I get stuck with ANY backline, I'm a little bummed :hmm:

I frickin' hated the Ampeg 810 I played through for six months. It sounded exactly like my GK stack...if it were wrapped in mattresses. I guess it's part of that retro sound. Just not my thing, I guess. Besides, if I had to move one of those things, I'd go buy a guitar. Fact.
not touching the actual argument with a 10-foot pole (having never played through a fEARful), but could this have been an 8x10 from the "dark years" (in the '90s i wanna say?), where the speakers had less high end than the originals or the later revisions?

Whether you like them or not, the Ampeg 810 is a well established standard that would be accepted by just about any backline rider. That's what makes it a good reference point when comparing other cabs. It's a pretty safe bet that almost every bassist that's been around for a while has played through one.

Been playing bass since 1968 and have never played through one. I have never felt so worthless.

I imagine that's possible, though as much as I've loved several Ampeg amps over the years, I've never heard an Ampeg cab I'd buy. I think the Fender 810 Pro is a much better sounding cab, but I don't play those any more either...IMO, cab design has moved forward in the past few years, and I'm a believer :)

That the fF stuff is a big technical leap forward, that's for sure true.
Mostly. There have been three way cabs of various sorts for a long time.
The fF stuff make great use of current very good drivers.

That some fF designs are higher SPL than most standard issue stuff, that's for sure true.

If, as a design, it works better for you, cool, that's great.

If as a design, it doesn't, that's understandable; and also ok.
They're a design that sounds different than most "standard issue" stuff out there;
so,
if they didn't fit "your idea of what you want a bass cab to sound like," that wouldn't be surprising, anymore so that "A GK guy not liking Ampeg stuff" or vice versa.

I just had the pleasure of playing a fEARful 12/6 and a 1212/6/1 built by an authorized builder. It was awesome. They sounded great. I even had the chance to compare them to an Ampeg 810. I have to say the fEARfuls simply sounded better. I'm not going to put any conjecture or hyperbole out there about the fEARfuls, but I will say they definitely are as advertised and in my opinion sounded better than the Ampeg. If you haven't played one figure out a way to do so. Take your Amp and Cab with you and do an A to B comparison for yourself. You will be impressed. I can almost guarantee it.

Just to add that I played an early 70s Ampeg 810 with a 68 V4 head the other night, and was nonplussed. It was ok, but I missed my Markbass rig (which, by the way, my LMIII head sounds great through the 810, and just as great through my dual Markbass 151P cabs). never played a fEARful cab, but I'm near to buying something from Barefaced.
