Finally starting my OWN project

EDITED version.

Are you a craftsman of the percussion world?
Are you flexible enough to play with talented multi-genre musicians?

We need you!

We feature a fiddler and vocalist with piano and bass, playing with an eye to variety and musical interest.

We're looking for a flexible percussionist to join us and complete the ensemble.
This person must be available for weekly rehearsals, own their own equipment, and have reliable transportation.
We are a working band with gigs already booked.
Performances start this fall! Email now!

TRY THIS.
Remember we are talking about drummers here.
BREIF, clear,concise, is imperative.

I think my electric jazz EQ was something along the lines of flat mid, boosted bass, cut treble. Tone knob to taste. Also experimented with flatwounds and felt under the bridge too, got some cool sounds that way, but felt it killed my solo tone.

Besides my GAS attack (lol), we took the weekend off from music things to hang out with my college kid. He thinks that all this music stuff is a waste of time. Unless we were doing Rockabilly or "something cool", which I guess we're not. Also, his mom is the singer, and as we all know, nothing mom does is ever cool. Also Bassists? Not cool. And why isn't that piano an organ or something? Isn't there anything cool about our band? And who says cool anymore? That ain't cool.

Also finished the sound clips from rehearsal. Turns out that I'm incapable of making through a record session without some kind of clam, or ringing piano note, or some other wince-inspiring noise. I nail it ever time the mic is turned off (I hope) - the rehearsal songs we did all had really, really easy bass parts. Would like to post 'em, but need to get the sign-off of the other players before doing that.

Doing it again tonight. I want to put one of the three from last week "in the can" along with the gypsy jazz. That wraps the open mic group in a bow, gets clips online, and brings the number of performance grade songs to 6, at least two of which could be tracked now if we wanted. Maybe 30 minutes total. 35 if we rap with the audience and extend solos a little.

I imagine I'll also get final deets and some music for the church gig also. This Sunday was booked with one of their congregants, so next Sunday is where it's at. Maybe.

The fiddler left yesterday on a 10 day vacation. The pianist has gigs Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The singer works double shifts Sun-Wed. Next full practice is on the 16th, and my new best guess on the church thing is the 21st or 28th. I hate to have these long breaks in the rehearsal schedule, but there's nothing for it.

I have nothing working. I mean nothing. No band, kids, or wife. My only obligation is my jam on Sunday night, but anywhere that I can play bass for 6 hours while my buddies feed me beer isn't any kind of obligation of which I am wary.

I might finally get to learn the bass line to Higher Ground!

Hi,

The consensus last night was that we need to quite screwing around and find a drummer. I'm gonna post on CL and see what I can find. Any feedback/advice/etc?

-*-*-*-*-

Are you looking for something outside the rock bang-bang-bang-bang scene? Are you a craftsman of the percussion world? Are you flexible enough to play with talented multi-genre musicians? Can you keep up with a top-flight fiddler?

We need you!

Potluck is a small contemporary left-of-the-dial ensemble currently interested in filling out our sound with a percussionist. We feature a fiddler and vocalist with piano and bass, playing with an eye to variety and musical interest.

Some examples of our tunes, genres, and variety:
Dark Eyes - Gypsy
Csardis - Classical
All of Me - Jazz
Jolene - Country
Mad World - Alt Rock
All about that Bass - Pop
Sway - Latin/Bossa
Finnegan's Wake - Irish
Walkin' in the Rain - Contemporary (Original)

We're looking for a flexible percussionist to join us and complete the ensemble. This person must be available for weekly rehearsals, own their own equipment (a kit is a fine start, auxillary/world is even better) and be willing to contribute creatively.

Performances start this fall! Email now!

I like this ad, very specific and not too verbose. It should appeal to the type of drummer you want to attract. Hopefully there are some in your area. The drummers who can't read or understand this ad you wouldn't want anyway. Any responses yet?

Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff

The bassline to Higher Ground is a depressingly stupidly fast duplet-triplet thing, even without the slap. I will try again in about a hundred years. Flea out-bassed my a$$ again! I'll get him one of these days! :bassist:

Between jam sessions and off days this weekend and last, we auditioned a drummer (is there an antonym for groove), a guitar player (rock guys can be really good, but not necessarily flexible) and a singer (karaoke is not good preparation for live music). The guitar player is actually really good on songs that he knows, so we might talk a little more with him. He is, as is everyone else, impressed with the fiddler and not impressed with the bassist. That's how it should be, right?

The ladies at the jam session also (evidently) had a clatch regarding Yoko-ing of the band. That singer promised to tone it down and just leave the, uh, fun as just fun. Remains to be seen, but a guy can hope, right?

Rehearsals start back up tomorrow!

Or, y'know, not. Singer had to work overtime, Pianist has a gig coming up and needed practice time, and the Fiddler was looking a little pale when I saw him Monday, so he's sick, yeah.

This is starting to worry me. 1/3 of practices have been cancelled in the last couple of months. Bummer.

CRAP.
I made dang sure NOT to say a word, for fear of jinxing it .

Ys know, there are rumours that some few musicians can be flakes at times...
Correct me if I'm wrong... So far, no one's seen a dime from this venture, yes ?

Nope. One free gig; zero red cents

The whole point of this project was to get out and play. I thought we were going to make 100 bucks from an upcoming church gig, which at least would be something. The church won't be able to pay guest musicians for the rest of the year due to budget cuts. However, they would happily have us play for free.

Fiddler is involved in two other projects, and the pianist got a job as the music director of a church, so I suppose a certain amount of flexibility is called for. Personally, I really like these guys. I would hate to lose them as friends. Buddies don't constantly bitch at you, so I can't constantly bitch at them.

I am imagining another half-dozen rehearsals will get two hours of material cold. Then, we can move to once a week.

Even if we don't do much more than that it will be enough to start kicking. The recording thing is a good idea but I'm not sure when we can set it up.

I need some gear. This just can't be an artistic venture; I gots to get paid, knowwhatimsayin? At some point I'm going to have to consider starting yet another group, to fill the needs of gigging and equipment
