I am sure they would be MORE than happy to let you play for free.

ask the ,and the office personnel, if they would be happy working for the rest of the year for free, I thought not.
If they were realistic, they could pay you SOMETHING, depending on the church, how much that may turn out to be.
HOW?
How do they pay for EVERYTHING they need or want?
I propose they could take up "AN OFFERING" in order to pay for the services and equipment needed for the worship team.
Like they have never thought of THAT ONE before

When you know exactly what you're looking for, it is sometimes harder to find exactly what you're looking for.......
Most likely, due to a group being a "team", you should be prepared to make even the slightest compromise,
if you care to speed the process up a bit........you don't have to sell your soul, but I've always found the working with
several people, there's multiple personalities, multiple perspectives and much like real world works, there are hidden agendas
from time to time. Just my 2 cents.

To be fair, the place has maybe 100 congregants and is of an exceedingly liberal bent. The same accompanist has been playing since the early 90's.
The pianist just started as the MD a couple of weeks ago. Once she gets involved it might be better.

Ever thought of having a more dynamic setup for your group? Kind of a "whoever is available" type strategy. You could play duo or trio gigs without the full band. For example, in my jazz trio we prefer to play as a trio, but if the drummer can't make or commit to a gig, we always have the option of playing as a piano/bass duo. Or if there are gigs that are more intimate or quiet, we can alter the formation if needed. If a gig is bigger and needs more excitment, we can make some calls and find a horn player or two.
And the pianist called off again due to her gig today.

The Audi will hopefully be done on Tuesday. Took 4 months to save up the scratch, which was (for replacement heads, not just gaskets) quite a bit more than $1000. Quite a bit. And it's been in the shop for two weeks already.
The PA gear is a $50 mic/cable/stand attached to a $20 10w guitar amp.
I have $1.13 left in savings and about $30 in my pocket.
So, uh, some success, I guess? *sigh*
Nope, a weird version (97 Cabrio) of a weird brand (Audi) by a weird manufacturer (VW) on a weird platform (they switched every model to the A4 platform that year, except this one, which is like a covertable 80, but not close enough for many/most parts) that sold less than 4k in the US, so none in local junkyards. And parts are expensive, even used. And labor is expensive, even independent non-dealer. And there are sensors everywhere that break when being removed. There has been a lot of public transportation this summer.
This weekend, I'm posting a down-to-jam ad on CL, reworking my resume, and doing what I can to damage both my liver and eardrums. Maybe I play out a little, maybe I just drink whiskey; either way, I win.

That's a really good idea. I'm looking for a couple people online this weekend to fill out a possible arrangement like that.
The major problem is that our trio set up is violin-piano-bass and the pianist is the person that is not available the most. She lives furthest away also. It's pretty hard to get any meaningful rehearsal done when so many octaves are empty, although working out a couple of tunes without a piano is starting to seem like a better and better idea.
I agree...the chordal instrument really needs to be there 
While bass/violin could work...you'd both have to be really at the top of your game! Not something i could pull off at this point.

But I think a decent rhythm guitarist could provide a lot of that chordal support and borderline percussive rhythm - especially something like a 12-string played not-too-loud. This was my role back when I did folk guitar stuff. Has this musician genre vanished completely?

Nothing yesterday or today either. So surprised.
Maybe she'll show up (or at least call) tonight. I had her pegged as super-reliable, but with the last couple of weeks, she's lost that title for sure.
We (fiddler, vocalist, and I) did a little work on a couple of songs, but not nearly as much as I wanted. More beer-and-jam than compose-and-rehearse. The fiddler tells me to be patient. I notice that he's playing out once a week with some band or another and I'm playing out, well, once (in the last 8 years or whatever). And 5 months + 1 gig + 0$ + laughable PA acquisition = ALREADY WAY TOO PATIENT!
Man, this sucks. Reading this thread, that opinion seems to vacillate between Boo! and Yay! in each up-and-down in the project. Giving up on this instrumentation and finding a couple more guys is looking better and better.
