Firefox Bass from Ark Instruments

I tend to be a traditionalist when it comes to bass designs. The Pbass is my instrument of choice. But I have to admit, I find this design very attractive, although definitely different and futuristic. Am I the only one that's been checking out this bass? Dare I say, "This is the bass BMW should have designed?

I wonder if it has the Kubicki price?
I thought when I was poking around the Internet I saw a price on one. It was well above the price of most mass produced basses, but a relative bargain compared to the more well-known boutique names. I don't want to repeat the price because I don't know how long ago that may have been or what options it included etc. I'll leave that to the builder. But they are not cheap and you will probably either be saving up money or selling off some of your gear to pay for it. Unless of course, you're more blessed financially than most of us! ;)

I'm done with lesser known name custom basses. I'm very satisfied with the ones I bought, but man I've seen people take a beating when they sell them.

I like a bunch of your designs (I'm assuming these are all yours?) But the Astro is another one that's out of this world!

Yes, there is that. I'm not in buying mode myself. I'm getting old to be buying new instruments and I already have more than what I need, if not everything I'd like to have. We are moving to a new state next year and planning to downsize in the process, so I plan to put some pieces in the classifieds after the holidays. Still, it's always fun to look! :)

Does anybody else see a marked resemblance to a Kubicki Factor, or did I just listen to too much Stu Hamm in the 80's???

Not a secret that this series of basses of mine are inspired by the Kubicki, he personally gave me his approval to continue with my vision for it before he passed on. I used to play Factor basses (a fretted and a fretless) and worked at a store that sold them. Phil Kubicki was very free with his knowledge and I looked up to him when I was thinking of possibly designing in the future.. I changed the things about Factor's that I didn't personally like such as the bridge, scale length and capo design and headstock..

I love this design. My one gripe is the 5th string being longer than the others at the head. I'm sure there is a technical reason for it but there has to be a way around that. You can't design something like this with such an emphasis on the visuals and leave that like it is. Where there's the will there's a way.

The longer low string has frets and a capo for adding lower notes like the Kubicki Ex-Factor does, for a 4 string you can drop to D for a 5 string you can drop to A

Yeah I knew there was functional reason for it but I'd be happy to drop that functionality in order to preserve good looks. The bass is a visual statement so I would preserve its looks as much as possible.

Personal taste, I much prefer this look than without the extension and capo ;)

+1

If they want to sell instruments, they need to make it waaaay easier. It's very cool looking, but it would be nice to be able to go somewhere to see the specs.

My site i not quite ready to publish yet so for now I have been sending people here to see examples of my work:

I do not publish specs because each instrument is built to the exact specs the customer wants, there are NO production models available to buy, custom order basis only. In some cases you can choose your own builder if I approve of them first..
