First Act Bass...let the flame fest begin..

I just dropped a Desert Dawg (local guitar parts company) P-bass pickup in along with new CTS pots and a Switchcraft jack last night. (Plus a nice set of Schaller Straplocks to keep it off the ground!) What a difference! The tone has improved 100%. Only thing left to get now is the Gotoh 201 bridge and I'm set! Can't wait to try it out at band practice this weekend!

It was all good before the upgrades..... but I'm the kind of guy that just can't leave my basses "stock". Never have been, never will be. That's boring. I need to personalize them.

Tough to beat a great bass that, even with upgrades, was still a bargain. Especially cool if it's something that the internet experts say sounds terrible - but people who've actually heard it know sounds great!

Yeah, I was jokin' because the skull bass is also below $100 (shipping aside). I'd much rather have your bass than the skull bass, except maybe for Halloween gigs.

My grandson plays a set of First Act drums (as a matter of fact he is on his second set) The reresent a good value for youngsters getting into music for (in some cases) the first time. I think they are great!

Bass players are snobby?! You oughta talk to the mandolin folks: they'll rip you because your mando only cost five grand, because everyone knows you gotta spend at least ten g to get something decent.

We won`t even get into banjo players. If you`re banjo isn`t a pre-war Gibson, it`s crap.

Just ordered a chrome Gotoh 201 bridge from Warmoth earlier today. Can't wait to get it! My bass is loving me for all of the TLC I'm showing her! LOL

I love the RD ripoff that First Act has... Haven't been able to find/play one anywhere.

HUUUUUUUUUUUGE difference between the FA WalMart deals, like the OP has... and the FA custom shop (which is what the RD knock offs are).

I started a couple threads abut the FA customs last year during "The Great RD Artist GAS of '09". There are actually quite a few bassist i admire that use these things. According to the wonderful denizens of TB, even the FA customs have their share of problems... mostly sharp frets.

A few months ago i saw a show in which two of the bassists used an actual RD Artist (Young Widows) and an FA Del Gado (Russian Circles). They both sounded phoenomenal. And while both had different pedals/amps/cabs... the RD was just a bit better, but the Del Gado absoloutly SLAYED.

So, IMHO, with the FA Customs being $1200ish... you could probably find an actual RD Artist for the same price... However, with the FA Del Gado's, you can at least really decide almost every aspect of it, so you could potentially get something VERY specific and tailored to your liking. And honestly, $1200ish for a custom bass is on the pretty-damn-cheap end of the spectrum.

people look at the headstock and judge to quickly IMO.
(cheap bass = bad bassist)
as long as you find "your" sound, who cares what its on, or what the price tag was.
i dont.
ive played a lot of basses with cheap written all over them,
a lot of them sound really good, especially for the price point.

I agree; in my stage rack I've got a conklin 7, a warwick NT thumb 4, a Music Man Stingray, and an old OLP with the frets ripped out and the neck sanded down - I love to park the warwick and grab that nasty ole' OLP, and man, after some minor mods, it sounds great!

Got my Gotoh 201 bridge today! Awesome! Solid and sounds great. Makes my bass balance on the strap better too! She is ready to rock completely now!! I'll never get rid of this bass!!

Nice lookin' bass man. If you don't mind me asking what did that run you? I've played a few of their basses in their boston shop, and I recall them being in the $600-1800 range depending on style/features/etc, so I'm kind of curious....

It ran about $2000 shipped w/ case because of the finish...a bit pricey, but still a good price for a handmade custom. I was obsessed with acquiring one since playing a Delia bass at NAMM. The boys at the First Act custom shop make a very high quality instrument.

No one should be busting on First Acts. The entry-level garbage we had back in the 80's makes this look like a freakin' Dingwall.

Doubt I'd drop $2k on one though...
