Hello Fordera peeps - New TB user here. I've got a Fodera NYC Standard 5 being assembled right now so I should have pics posted real soon...cannot wait! Thanks for sharing, everyone - These basses are just amazing. I used to own an Emperor 5 from 1992 - 2000 but sold it to help fund my LA relocation from Boston. Needless to say, I'm beyond thrilled to be back in the Fodera Club.

Of course, now that I have one on order I find myself fighting to urge to email Jason about an Emperor II 5 string with Claro Walnut top. Ha ha - Fodera = a completely different level.

This fellow indicates in the 'comments' that he is making two more replicas. I'm hoping Jason will pick up on this infringement and ask that he stops any further builds that remotely resemble a Fodera.

It's true. There's a difference between a knock-off and a counterfeit. Once you steal the logo, you are into counterfeit territory as far as I'm concerned.

Its not like he's mass producing these and selling them as real "foderas"... like people do in foreign countries with Nike and Gucci stuff

This is a good question though...

Nice replicas but they really do look different from a real fodera

not sure it matters. the logo pretty much sends it out of hommage into theft of intellectual property, imho.

re mass producing: since there aren't that many fodera basses out there (when compared to fender, for instance), one copy is one too many and three copies (his projected total) is ridiculous.

i think it shows the guy is either larcenous or lazy. in any event, he should do his own thing and not ride someone else's coattails.

Yes. It's really damaging. I know quite a bit about this space because its relevant to my work.

"Shape" based trademarks (ie; the shape of the body design) are enforceable in the US, but they are very challenging to defend. Most countries don't really allow for it - but the US does. The way it works though, is that a company that wants to defend their "shape trademark" must defend it whenever they see someone knocking it off.

That sounds logical enough but it costs time and money to defend these things. For a small company that can be a real barrier - they simply don't have the cash or the manpower to defend all these violations.

The problem is - if you don't defend them - eventually you lose the right to defend them and then the design is (for all intents & purposes) public domain (like the Fender designs are today).

Brand trademarks are easier to defend but the same principle applies - if enough examples exist of a company not defending its trademark - they can lose that trademark. This is what happened to Bayer with "Aspirin". The term became so generic that eventually they couldn't claim it was theirs anymore.

So it seems innocent enough, but in reality it steals legitimate trademarks and designs from a very small company - and puts them at risk for losing those trademarks and designs. Since (I'm sure) Fodera has limited resources to fight these things - it really runs the risk of hurting the little guy.

So bottom line - this sort of thing is bad. It doesn't matter how "innocent" it appears to be. It hurts Fodera that somebody is out doing this and I hope they stop (and destroy that bass while they're at it).

Just measured mine. Yes, the teardrop case (these appear to be TKL, by the way) does have a compartment under the neck. the dimensions are a bit irregular, but the 'minimum' dimensions are 9.5"x9.5"x1"deep. Not a great deal of room, but for flatter stuff, not bad.

Absolutely. You can't even appreciate how amazing the woodworking done on this bass is until you hold it your hands. Equally beautiful are the joints where the neck, back and top all come together. There is a line of dark wood, I don't know it it's ebony or not, that creates a 'line' between all the pieces where they are glued together, and even lines the joint where the top and back come together. It feels like it's all one piece, so perfect is the joint and the finish.

The thing I had heard about Foderas before I bought mine is that there is a "cohesiveness" to the woodworking and selection of the woods that is unparalleled. That's been my experience on mine- it just seems together, and vibrates accordingly.

Curt that YY Deluxe you got is absolutely beautiful man oh my lord am i jealous!!!!

Good call man.. Although the standards are nice in their own right the Deluxe's are just amazing....! I mean dam only 6 per year thats nothing...

Can you post a video review of it or something? or more pics!!
