I guess when I heard the term "collector" I thought of someone who doesn't play at all and just likes to have fancy shmancy instruments hangin on their wall. I don't care how they spend their money. I wasn't referring to the amateur with extra cash who buys nice gear like I do. :D

That's my definition also, and has nothing to do with a guy who plays (at a high or low level) and has a bunch of instruments. Most of us on Talkbass would be considered 'collectors' but that loose definition. My comment of 'not really getting it' was only directed toward a few people I'm aware of that literally don't play, and buy dozens of high end basses to literally 'hang them on the wall'.

That's why, when a collector sells an instrument, it usually is priced higher than the typical used price of a given model, since, literally, it's never been played.

Also, while I don't 'get it', it surely doesn't bother me:)

I can see why people would appreciate basses as a form of purely aesthetic art. Its just like a type of sculpture that happens to be functional. If I had the cash I'd probably buy some ultra nice basses to literally "hang on a wall". Unfortunately I need to play my basses to justify the cost! :D

I have small number of instruments that don't get played (much), I just dig them. What is funny is that one of them is an 83 silverburst les paul. Finish has kind of mirror shattered, silver has kind of yellowed. It's look 'reliced', that is another thing I could possibly consider 'interesting ;) I also have one bass I bought new, but rather than never played it, I got comfy on it for a month and then gigged it twice, just say it is not dead mint ;)

If you have to buff something out, it's not dead mint. It can be, but it's not.

If you know that by the time you show it to someone it will, not might, be dead mint, it's mint IMO. I'm talking extremely light surface stuff, maybe one step past fingerprints:D. YMMV.

Are dead mint and mint the same thing? Maybe I'm talking mild comatose mint, just waiting to be awakened.
;)

Hey Brad, I always wondered this, but do you own a buffer? I got one recently to make things all shiny and such, and wondering if you got the same since your stable is a thing of beauty.

The only thing I can say is I don't ever intend to underestimate the really anal in the future.

That said, I don't even use that term anymore, for me I don't care about it, if I'm buying I don't care about it ALTHOUGH ironically enough I find that just as many people say mint that have no idea what they are talking about than the people who actually keep stuff mint, and if I'm selling then I always assume there is a tiny mark somewhere in some crevass or whatever that I can't see. Because you can believe that if someone is asking you a lot of questions about mint, the notion that he plans to buy it to put it to use is not likely.

I got past feeling uncomfortable about imposing on Kevin Brubaker when it comes to buffing, he has far better buffers than I'd buy and is way more anal about it too:D

I have an orbital automotive buffer I bought maybe twenty years ago, still haven't used it.

Don't tell anyone but I think occassionally he likes the distraction/diversion of working on other stuff. I stopped by with a pawnshop find, an old Electra MPC Outlaw (like Chris Squire's) with two onboard effects modules. Next thing I know he had replaced one cracked bowtie MOP inlay... and it looked original, he got a great match. When something's wrong he genuinely needs to fix it:D

I'm really not that anal (at least IMO) about my basses. becuase my hands don't sweat, it makes them extremely easy to keep clean. Plus I don't do things like set them near partons/clumsy musicians/etc. So that takes a lot of potential ding causers out of the mix. I do freel let others play my basses and while I keep an eye on them, not uncomfortably so.

The only thing I can say is I don't ever intend to underestimate the really anal in the future.

Me neither. I had someone complain that a Korea version of a US bass didn't have the mirror finish of the US bass. He thought it should, I thought "duh" and took the bass back. In our minds I'm sure we both thought we were right.

Agreed. And I don't use the term either. For me it always meant as good as that particular piece could be, not "This SX bass is now the equal of a Fodera" (apologies to both brands ;)). Bottom line, are you going to play it or stare at it? If you're one of these guys ":eyebrow: ", I'd rather not bother. Those are the kind of people who might complain about a lack of uniformity in a Spalted Maple pattern.
:D

btw, thats looking at the clip from left to right. i sent my pope pre back to mike and he sent me a refurb which had a different location of where you plug in the clips, so top down could mean something different depending on what version of the pre you have.

Ok, but you show using all 4 of the pin slots on the clips?

first off, i re read my last post and i meant to say different location of where you plug the connector onto the circuit board.

and yes, on both the aeros that were previously in my bass and the duncans that are in there now, all 4 pin slots on the clips are taken up. i had big splits in the bass for a while and those didnt have all 4 clips taken up because there was nothing to short to ground in the pickups so the coil split switch didnt do anything.

After removing the clips I have found the color code, but of course now I'm not sure of the order, but I'll figure that out.

This bass was setup with Black on a pin, red on a pin and white and green together on a pin and the shield to ground.

Does anyone else have Duncans wired like that? I do have the parallel/single coil switch also. Mine only uses 3 pins for each pickup.

Well Mike Pope built a lefty pre for me. I have DC Duncans and I installed the new Pope pre two months ago and the first slot nearest the body edge is empty then it is black, red, green/white, shield, black, red, green/white. I have humbucking/single and Low/mid and active/passive switches on mine.

You and I seem to have the Same wiring setup. Thanks for all the help guys. She is running Perfect now!!!

I think you are going to be pretty pumped. I was just at the shop yesterday and they were doing the final rub-out of your refinish. I actually asked Joey if it was a new bass (it looked that good) as the last time I was there I didn't see it being built...I think the electronics will be back in it in the next couple of days!

It looks KILLER! Also, looks like we were all way wrong about the timing of the refinish. I am assuming that your bass was a Monarch 4 with Mahogany body, maple top and P/J pup setup?

When I got my Fodera Monarch Deluxe, it had several nicks, scratches, chips, holes, etc. in it from the previous owner.

I tried to lightly sand (800 to 1500 wet) and buff them out, but a couple of them were just too deep. Here's one that was going really well, until I leaned a bit too much towards the edge and took off all the finish at the edge. Even though I've already taken off more finish than I should have, the hole is still prominently visible, and now it has a new problem.

So, I finally decided to send it back to Fodera to be refinished.

They are REALLY backed up on repairs and refinishing right now, so they wouldn't even make a guess about how long it will be before they get it done.

I began to miss my Fodera the instant I packed it in the box. :(
