For you married men......

Isn't that odd? I got hit on FAR more when I wore a ring than I do now! ***?

a wedding ring on a guy is like a seal of approval - married men are guaranteed as they have wives who have chosen to stay with them. also some women want a strings-free fling, and married or seriously attached men are safer that way. and there are women and men out there who just prefer trying to get what other people have.

a single buddy of mine used to wear a wedding ring when he went to clubs so he'd get picked up more, and it worked.

to the OP, maybe you and your wife need to talk about this. wearing a ring or not doesn't keep a spouse from straying - it's all about their feelings and what they do when they're approached.

I don't like anything at all on my hands or wrists when I'm playing. Most guys I know don't either. Most women musicians I know, however, don't seem to mind wearing rings while playing. Possibly it's because women tend to grow up wearing jewelry, whereas the first (and often the only) piece of "real" jewelry many men will ever wear is their wedding band.

Point out to your wife that if that's why she thinks you don't like to wear it at gigs, how come you also take it off to practice at home? Are you trying to hide your marital status from your bass?

I haven't worn my wedding ring in 25 years. I worked the back of a garbage truck for 30 years and wearing a ring wasn't very comfortable when lifting cans all day. My wife is very understanding and knew why, even now, I can't fit my ring over my knuckles, fortunately my playing is awful and no one's the wiser. ;)

Mine took some adjustment but I don't even think about it anymore even though it is a big ring. If I'm recording or practicing, I sometimes take it off and perhaps at outdoor gigs when it's hot and my fingers swell a bit...

If you do take it off, your wife has to remember you are a bass player and no women will come close to you.

I work in a hospital. We are always putting on and taking off gloves to fo very nasty work-which is much better than the alternative. Ring/fret clang also drives me bananas. I always have to remind myself to put my ring ON.
Trust me Shnuggums, NOBODY is interested in a 50 year-old Fredo Corleone doppleganger.
