"I can't wear the ring because I have a nickel allergy." "Oh, so is that why you always use nickel strings instead of stainless?" "Ummm...."

Seriously though, I have a honkin' band that clacks on the fingerboard something fierce whenever I play. I prefer not to have it on when playing so as not to bang up the bass, but sometimes I keep it on to keep her happy. What can you do, right?

I use cobalt strings. I have used nickel in the past and haven't really had a problem with allergic reaction. My doctor said its because the amount of time my fingers are in contact with the strings is small when compared to wearing a ring 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

I have a problem wearing my wedding when I play my bass ,whether practicing at home or at gigs, I find it extremely uncomfortable, my wife who is the singer on our band always wears hers on our gigs , she thinks I don't wear mine so the women don't know I'm married ..
do any of you guys find it difficult to play with your wedding band or is it just me?
Well, my ring doesn't get in the way so I guess I can't relay any advice.
You might do something like French kiss her before each set, just to let everyone in the audience that you and your wife are a thing.

Put it on some string and tie it around your neck like the One Ring, and if you must... lay one on your wife at the beginning of each set. (Note: I'm not married, and don't plan on it, but if I were, that's what I'd do.)

When we got married we were having special silver and mother of pearl bands made by the Iriquois tribe of Native Americans down in New Mexico. Long story short, they missed the deadline so we cancelled the order. The middle man jewelry store we were dealing with in D.C. loaned us some rings for the ceremony, which of course - we gave back afterwards.

A few months later, my wife presented me with a beautiful handmade silver ring with a turquoise stone almost the size of a nickel. It was beautiful, a real work of art and a true display of craftsmanship. Try as I might I could never wear it when I played. It was clumsy. She understood and we both had a nice chuckle about it. It laid in her jewelry box for years. After I achieved a little success a number of years later, I bought her a very modest ring at Tiffany's - feeling great that I was finally able to do something nice for her.

When my father passed away in 2007, I inherited his pinkie ring. It was actually quite nice with a sizable diamond set in white gold. Problem is - it didn't fit me - and pinkie rings are most definitely not for me. My dad was a practical man, and when his father passed away, he had one of his rings re-tooled for himself. I took the cue from that - and I had a teardrop necklace made for her in honor of Dad using the diamond from the pinkie ring. She is allergic to gold and since silver was too soft to properly secure the setting, I ended up doing it in platinum for her. I had the pinkie ring melted down and made into a simple plain wedding band for myself - with a special inscription honoring both her and my father. On our next anniversary, I wrapped both packages up and gave her both. I then told her to give me the one with the wedding band. The ring is completely unobtrusive and rarely, if ever - leaves my finger.

I guess the whole thing worked out, she is one incredible woman - we are celebrating our 39th on August 1st.

When I gigged on doumbek (arab drum) my ring came off. My wife was cool with it. I was playing for bellydancers all night but wife knew I was going home with (or to) her.
On bass, it doesn't get in the way at all, so it stays on.

My wife and I got titanium wedding bands. Mine is on the smaller side, I think it's 5 or 6 mm wide (around 1/4"), and it's comfort cut, so if you cut the ring it would look basically like this in a cross-section: ()

Very comfortable, specifically went with Ti and comfort cut because of bass playing.
