I missed qualifying...as it was last night!!!!????

and now the sprint race is on!...to qualify positions for Sunday?

110,000 people at Silverstone to watch the racing...What a great weekend that must be...camping...like the Glastonbury Festivals I went to in my youth.

So if I'm understanding the "Sprint qualifying explained" vid from April, it's a re-formatting of the typical weekend. One practice session Friday morning, qualifying for the sprint race Friday afternoon, practice session Saturday morning, 100 km long sprint race to set grid for Sunday race. I kinda like it. From the highlights it looked like a wild race.

Yeah for Max! Lewis was on pole for the sprint race, but Max got a good run on him right at the start and kept it through to the end, even though both of them had some serious graining on their FR tires.

I was kind of surprised there was a formation lap, so this was really just a mini GP race, so to speak (the way I see it).

I liked it. The first lap dice between Max and Lewis was good but then turned into the normal follow the leader stuff. Alonso was pretty active and there was a fair amount of good battles in the midfield. I'm hoping that the changes to the 2022 cars do what they are intended to do... allow them to race closer without losing the front end like Perez did today.

So I'm still a relative newb to F1. Yes, the first season of Drive to Survive got me hooked. But I am coming to love the sport and its history. I'm still learning a lot about it.

The way I understand it is that if a driver has the edge or the lead going into a corner, he has the "right" to the racing line. I don't know if that's a written rule in the FIA rules or if that's just a gentlemen's agreement on track. All the replays I've seen looked like Verstappen was ahead of Hamilton going into that corner (is that the Copse corner?) and despite Verstappen being ahead of Hamilton he still gave him room, and Hamilton missed the apex of that corner by a pretty substantial margin, tagged Max's back right wheel and he goes flying into a pretty scary crash. Again, admitting I'm a F1 newbie, looking at the replays, it looks like this one is pretty squarely on Hamilton and a ten second penalty seems a bit soft. To anyone here who's a more seasoned F1 fan that I am, is this what is regarded as a racing incident? Either way, I think any fan could agree that it was a scary looking crash and hope Max is back on track soon. I'm pretty sure it wasn't all that long ago that a crash like that would've been fatal. I've heard it was anywhere from 51-78 G-forces. That's insane!

Hamilton, clearly, was the one who caused the accident. The best proof of that is that his left front tire hit Max's right rear tire, so it is pretty obvious that Lewis was not in position to "own" that corner.

I'm with Jeff -- Hamilton was clearly at fault today. And yeah, I'm also with Horner on this one -- with all of Hamilton's experience, he clearly knew what was at stake and had the talent to avoid it. It's a real shame, although I will enjoy that it's tightened up the point standings. :D

My big takeaway from the weekend is how quick the Mercedes cars were this weekend, particularly Hamilton. It's obvious they're reacting to Red Bull developing their car and are now trying to advance their own. And we're merely a race or two in front of the halfway point of the season... so get ready, everyone... this is gonna be a dogfight. :cool:

Regarding racing rules/etiquette heading into a corner, I've always been told that if the driver trying to pass gets their front wheels at least to the midway point between the axles of the car ahead of him, then the challenging driver has the line... the driver in front should be able to see this... and thus should surrender the corner.
