Fretless 5 String Competition - Simnett Guitars

Thanks very much :)

Just a quick update... the neck blank has been glued & planed to size, plus I've slotted the fretboard.

Please tell me you didn't use the hand plane pictured to do this. :hiding:
I'm having problems figuring out how to use the proper power tools to get things looking this nice ... I don't even want to think about trying to do it by hand.

I used both.. I get it more or less level by hand, then do a couple of passes on the planer to finish it off. It would be quicker to use the planer to do it all, but I prefer to use hand tools when possible... plus the Maple & Ebony shavings look cool :D

^ Gets my vote even if the bass doesn't get finished. You have to admire someone who not only prefers to do things the "hard way" just because they like to (not because they have to) AND they have the skill to actually pull it off beautifully.

You know, I think the greatest part of working with wood, and especially creating something so meaningful, functional and beautiful with it, is watching it evolve from concept to rough wood to... something like this. It's a beautiful process, very honest and rewarding. Awesome work here, your precision inspires.

I've spent some time today drawing up a plan for this project... I'm going with a 34" scale, 19mm spacing, lined fretboard (the 2 lines you can see mark the 24th fret & the end of the fretboard), also the body will be chambered (outlined in red). I'm toying with the idea of adding an F-Hole... or rather an S-Hole, as it's the 'S' from the Simnett logo :smug:

That's really cool... may I ask what you use to print it out like that? Or is it a CAD program of some sort that is very expensive?

Beautiful build! Very inspiring.

Nothing expensive.. just a pencil, pen & a ruler :D I draw my plans by hand, the only part that I use a computer for is the bridge.. I take a drawing of the Hipshot bridge (from Stew Mac's website), resize it, print it out on paper and then attach it to the plan with some double sided tape.

Nobody said that I had to be facing the camera :D And before I get asked... (a) No, I'm not a woman (b) As far as I'm aware I'm not related to Cousin It from The Adams Family.

Fellow longhair here. I get Darth Vader (Helmet Head) or if I wear my Cowboy Hat, Ronnie Van Zant (Lynyrd Skynyrd).:D

Very nice! Subscribed for progress pics.

+1

I'm in!:hyper:

God Bless, Ray
