Not quite up to speed but learning to play this accurately on the FI is really forcing me to focus on technique. There's no trickery going on here to get the octaves to jump out, just lots of work on left hand muting and consistent right hand fingering. I found that favouring my rear pickup on my jazz has helped with this but I'm still plucking between the pickups.

I don't know if you guys know the EHX C9, but I trying to reproduce the preset 2 of C9 ("Prog"... reminds a little one of the synths preferences of Emerson from ELP - and, no, very different from preset tarkus)

I’ll have to check out those resources. I’ve been really interested in synth bass sounds for quite a few years but haven’t really played around with proper synths. I guess it’s just time to play around with what I’ve got and see how close I can get to some of the Classic sounds I’ve heard.

Hi Ben, thanks. If by “background” you mean some formal education in synthesis then no; I got into it a couple of years ago (and wished I had sooner) and just picked up stuff by reading, listening and playing around.

I also have both the FI and the C4. Lots of classic sounds use only one or two oscillators so can often be covered by both pedals. The C4’s envelopes aren’t as flexible as the FI’s so I find that the FI is more useful if I’m trying to recreate a particular sound. C4 also has no pulse width control for the square wave so any sounds which use narrow pulse or pulse width modulation are impossible to create. I still love the C4 as there is plenty it can do which the FI can’t.

As regards size, have you seen or got one of the @GisserD compact FI housings? They are pretty snazzy and reduce the footprint drastically.

The Moog Model D app is now free in the App Store and well worth getting. Playing around on that will help learn lots.

At present I use them separately. I’ve actually got my 2 octave pedals (in series) and in one loop of my LS-2 and a Mastotron in its other loop. The output of the LS-2 then runs into my Source Audio Linar. That whole sub-chain is in the loop of the C4 so I can trigger the C4 envelopes with my dry bass signal and have it apply to the octave+fuzz->chorus. It’s basically doing what my Manta did. When it comes to synth, I generally gravitate to the FI as the more flexible envelopes and wider oscillator choices allow me to dial in what I want.
