This is the usual cause. When opening the editor, it looks for the last-opened patch. If this patch has been moved into a different folder then it can’t find it and crashes.

Work out what the last patch you opened was and move it back to the folder it was in them launch the editor.

I’ve emailed @Andras Szalay to ask if the editor can be updated to make it just load an INIT patch of it can’t find the last-loaded patch.

If you have no joy with that method then uninstall the editor and use App Cleaner by FreeMacSoft to remove the residual files and then reinstall the editor. You’re not the first person who’s done this this weekend.

In my Future Impact folder I created sub folders for
  • v3_sounds - factory patches - static until the next release I guess
  • user patches - mostly @QM downloads ;-) - dynamic, additive
  • dev_sounds - stuff I'm working on - dynamic, additive
  • upload - the master folder to upload from dynamic, always has the current 99
dynamic, additive means - no deletions from the folder
development files get embedded revision numbers
I think this style of file management will get around that...

I'm very new to the FI. I've also been a long term coder. This is not terribly different from hoe I organize my coding projects... much simpler as there is minimal Rev management but similar thought process.

That's quite similar to how I have my stuff arranged.

Today I'm walking through the 'using the FI as an effects engine' section of the manual. I'm also going to start on level setting between my rather hi output P5 Lull and lower output Marco N1 P4. I think I'll end up balancing those two with a gain boost from my SA EQ2.

Currently I have the
C4 on ch1
EQ2 on ch2
FI on ch3
Mercury on ch1 -using that stand alone at the moment. Also put a Nemesis delay in the chain for fun. Thinking about a Ventris... we'll see.

Of course my only active bands at present are a swampy blues thing where effects are limited to a little distortion and the color of my cable ;-) and what is basically a Beatles, Eagle, Tom Petty, Sheryl Crow tribute... Need to find some like minded folks for an 80's synth pop tribute...

The bit on distortion is covered in the second part of the section called “building your first sound” as the distortion section is fairly extensive.

I would suggest a note and/or link to that in the stand alone section for completeness. Seems redundant I know but some folks (like me) are going to use the manual as a reference more than a tutorial - however ill advised that may be...

You can be pretty blatant about it, 'We already cover this in Chapter 2 but for those of you who just had to skip ahead...' or ' For information on using your FI as a stand alone distortion, please refer to section Trois'

We have to do this in tech documentation all the time... I've seen Tables of contents that were actually checklists. Click the link, read the info, return and you get the next check. End of the checklist started launch procedure for an ariel vehicle... they wanted to be sure the list was actually performed lest an operator create a smoking hole at the end of the launch process aka Lawn Dart...

What is the verdict on the preset sounds in the V3 firmware ? Do they form a good staring point ... better than the originals I mean ?

I've been putting off the upgrade because I haven't yet picked out all the old patches (from the talkbass library) that I want to preserve and upgrade ... but if the V3 presets are a marked improvement on the originals, I may just upgrade anyway.

All the old Talkbass library files are still available on v3 - I ported them all over to v3 and uploaded them to the built-in panda fileshare website. There’s very little reason not to upgrade the firmware. Listen to the video on YouTube of all 99 factory patches being demoed, listen to the clips on the Panda fileshare website and listen to my clips here if you need further convincing.

The defaults are an improvement from the original defaults in my opinion. Way more usable sounds, but I was in a position of having defined all the sounds I was using and was up and running. While I realize that I can import those old sounds back on the device, I feel that between the upgraded software and new user sounds that it doesn't pay to go backwards...as such, I've been stalled since upgrading using just the stock sounds. There are a few I like...I need to re-invest the time in how I want to use this pedal. Like any deep pedal, you get out of it what you put into it. This one is a bottomless pit of being able to put time in, but you can be VERY successful w the user and default presets...just takes time to go through all of them

Spot on and I’ll add a few things I found out: (1) if you don’t like a stock sound try it through an envelope filter and you may be rewarded with an awesome sound. I found this out with the guitar-like sounds that lacked bass. When I ran them into my IE XD they suddenly became more usable for bass/synth tones. (2) I reorganized the presets by sound type so I could compare similar sounds side-by-side. This is a work in progress still but having them close to each other is easier than trying to remember where that other octave sound is. (3) Spreadsheets, lists and notes are your friend.

Yes I've been through this cycle with an analog synth recently ... I have printed lists and also all sounds are grouped by function (pads, pianos, etc). Looks like that's the way to tackle getting involved with the FI again. Thanks/

Spot on! I just recently dusted out my printouts and notes from my old setup as well as since I upgraded. Looks like I did a bunch of analysis on the sound library but then must've gotten side-tracked. Time to bump this back up on my list of importance.

Also agreed on complimenting the sounds with other pedals. I control my Future Impact (Future Compact) using a Boss ES-8 and have it set up to turn on the xerograph deluxe with my patches for the filter sweep. It's pretty gnarly when you use something like that along with also the filter sweep midi control. Gets REALLY deep swooshes. So much opportunity w sound.
