Future Impact now available!! WAS: deep impact reissue!!! interested?

Your reply seems to have missed out a bit of information I need:

With the interface out output cable plugged into the FI’s MIDI input, moving sliders on the editor should show “- - “ in the PEDAL’s display; does this happen? If it does not, it is likely the cable that is defective.

Clearly the FI’s ports are functioning correctly from the tests you have done.

Whilst that info about the cable from the seller is true for the older FI units, the FI4 is designed to work with cheaper interfaces as the packet sizes were reduced. I did testing on a really old crappy basic interface and it worked fine.
I connected
It's possibly the driver for the USB to Midi cable. It should work with the new native Windows 11 driver since the February update, but some drivers are causing fits. Here's the discord where you can get help with that: Join the Windows MIDI / Audio Discord Server!
Wanted to report that i used the iConnectivity MioXC cable that was recommended to me by the company that sold the unit and everything went smoothly and quickly. I'm no techie but it sure seems like the USB to MIDI cable I was using was the problem.

Sincere thanks for all your input and apologies for wasting time over a simple thing like a bad cord (which I bought new and was told would work).

May not have been a design flaw, but simply a broken wire in one side. Glad you have got things working, just in time to install the new v4.5 update.

On a personal note, since you shared it publicly, I administered morphine to my sister for the last few days of her life that was taken by cancer and my wife went through surgery, chemo, and radiation for breast cancer. I would never say I know what someone else is going through, but I can say I have deep empathy for you and your family. I've been here almost 25 years answering questions and look forward to exploring my unit knowing there is a base of knowledge and support powered by people like you.

Thank you.

We are very lucky over here to have @Quatschmacher as a regular resource, for his work on the manuals, to his work in this thread! I suspect the abandonment rate for new FI users would be MUCH higher without him helping lead people over the initial hump!

Yes, we are lucky to have him here! :) But I understand he does not want to be overwhelmed with all the setup questions. What I have done is to upload the old and new manuals and PDFs to ChatGPT Plus, and asking the various setup/settings/MIDI questions there. It is able to guide me very well. Also for combining the FI with Midi Captain NANO controller it has been very helpfull with my setup questions.

Have you tried the FM patches yet?
Me: Is that the Karate Kid?! It IS the Karate Kid!! Hah, I never thought I'd be able to play the pan flute soundtrack of the Karate Kid on Bass. This new FM synth is a gas. Hey QM, @Andras Szalay thanks for getting some new categories in there for the editor! I notice there's one space left, just room enough for "Lead"! I'd like to organize lead sounds. Thanks for all your hard work. This is amazing!

That pan flute patch is really cool, isn’t it?

I don’t mind chipping in if folks are truly stuck. I would ask that people do try to follow the instructions in the document first as, if you follow those properly, things should be OK.

(If anyone has an issue with the editor not booting, please let us know. It happened to me this morning and I didn’t capture the diagnostic data. If it does happen, there’s a file it would be useful for us to have a copy of before you attempt to reinstall it.)

Sorry, I missed this earlier as I was skim reading while walking to an appointment.

I’m so sorry to hear what you have been through with your sister and wife. That must have been incredibly tough.

Thank you for your kind words of support.

that pan flute is the same one from this daft punk song

You’ll find some of those patches all over thousands of tracks. The DX7 was a bit of a pain to program so many people just used one of the stock 32 sounds. That’s why EP1 is all over all those 80s ballads and the ebass patch on lots of stuff too.

Yes! That is one of my favorites, for sure!

Oh, and yes, I was able to get 4.5 up and running last night (and this from a true MIDIot!). Nice job with the instructions! They are very specific, and you have to follow them, but they do work!

Spent a little time running through all 198 patches, and there are definitely some really fun ones in there. The pan flute and tubular bells really work quite well!

will we be able to add in our own dx7 patches in the future?
You can do that right now. You can download DX7 cartridge SysEx files from the web and load them, or create your own on a hardware DX7 or a software one such as Dexed, which is free.

awesome you can open a whole cartirdge and itll display the sounds in each one

2 things I noticed

the midi message to change the FI from on and off is diff in FM mode. I have to switch my CC message from 66 to 69 in order to get the fi to turn off with the second press in fm mode, not like I do in VA mode. VA mode i use 66 127 to turn on and 66 0 to turn off. this turns it on in FM mode but does not turn it off like it does in VA mode with second press.

a lot of the fm notes seem to have alittle click when they activate or a pop noise. ow do I adjust so this doesnt happen as much?

Well, I'm loving this thing so far, but part of it is just the FI itself. I've never dug deep into it, other than programming a couple of presets myself, so I'm learning/re-learning the FI4.x AND FI 4.5.

At this point, I only have one question: From the Addendum:

"There is a new PRIORITY button in the editor that also affects the VA editor. Previously a two-way switch (accuracy and speed), it now includes a third option: zero, the zerolatency mode. Zero mode can be faster and smoother than speed mode, but with new sounds you should experiment to find the best mode."

Under what circumstances might Zero mode NOT be smoother than Speed mode? I tried it on the one custom preset I did, and it seems to work just fine.

Quick mode question:
I'm not on 4.5 just yet so this is probably moot, but just curious. I think I remember that MIDI and audio were an either/or thing, meaning the FI could respond to either one, but not both at the same time.
But now I'm finding that in Bass mode, I can trigger sounds with my bass and also via MIDI, without switching anything. That's cool, but weird, right?

I'm about to update to 4.5, see y'all on the other side...

4.5 Rocks My World, HARD! Many thanks for all your hard and diligent work and extra kudos on the Addendum as it made the process simple enough for this Leanderthal, will need some more study on the new functions and features. Digging the new sounds, no regret passing on the MXR as the included sounds nail the originals plus we can use them as starting points for creations which is my whole bag. Tracking is much faster & accurate - even ghost notes are 'musical' not horrible squelches. 👍👍👍 The old Alesis V25 keyboard I use interfaced perfectly.

FM sounds are a plus though never been a big fan, must educate myself on those functions.

FWIW as I still have an use my v3 would be lovely to have those new 'song' sounds on that one too, if at all possible. I know I can't be the only one to make this humble request, I would be willing to pay a few bucks for that update if it makes a difference.
