Very nice basses!

I have no idea why I've never looked into G&L basses before now. My prized '71 Jazz was stolen a few years ago, and I'd like to buy another 'vintagey sounding' P-Bass to put a set of flats on.

The JB and LB-100 models really have my interest of late. I've been looking quite a bit at the G&L website, and a few online dealers to get a feel for the prices.

G&L offers some great options, and the prices are very good, especially for a U.S. made bass of their level of quality.

First on my list is an LB-100, alder body, rosewood fingerboard.

The big deal is that it's pretty awesome. Inner coils gets you in the neighborhood of a Stingray, outer coils is something like a modern, aggressive J-bass. It doesn't sound exactly like either of those two, but the flavor is definitely there.

I did mine as series/inner/parallel, with outer available via a push/pull pot. If I had it to do over again (and over Christmas, I might), I'd go for inner/parallel/outer...series can be a little bottom-heavy, and I much prefer the other three settings.

Have you tried taming the series mode using the bass knob? It can do wonders to your tone.

I've been playing with the G&L online configurator to design the ultimate LB-100.

Let's see...it has an alder or swamp ash body. Rosewood or ebony fingerboard. Quarter sawn #8 neck with vintage satin tint, that much is clear. Body color is CAR, 3TSB, vintage white or sonic blue. Or maybe honey or butterscotch blonde. Matching headstock, or not. Pickguard could be mint, black, tort or MOTS depending on the body color.

Obviously, it's all narrowed down and ready to order. Not!

Just becoming aware of this now... I never thought I would see the day that G&L would re-release the LB-100 and it would be so well received!

I bought this bass for $300 with case from a pawn shop in the mid 90's. I'm playing it here sometime around the year '00. Such a great bass. I find I use it an awful lot in my studio. It just does everything I need it to with ease.

You have to be careful ordering the switch because there are two types of four pole on-on-on switches. One is the common 4 pole switch which is a 4 pole version of the 3 position DPDT switch. Thrown one way they connect all to one side, thrown the other way they all conect to the other side and in the middle nothing connects.

THIS IS NOT THE SWITCH USED!

The K-mod switch is often called a three way switch because it can be wired to switch between three different connections. Basically the connections at the poles go in opposite diretions when you throw the switch rather than all to the same side. You have to look at a diagram of the switch to really wrap your head around it.

This is why you have to be careful about ordering the exact part number instead of just a 4 pole on-on-on switch.

Surely what you've just described is not an on-on-on but rather an on-off-on?

The answer is yes. Since the MFD pickups have two coils wound opposite they buck hum. Hence if you use single coils from each pickup if you use the outside coils (one nearest neck and one nearest bridge) they are oppositely wound and buck hum, Similarly if you the "inside" coils (one nearest bridge on neck pickup and one nearest neck on bridge pickup) you ALSO get humbucking as in a Jazz bass with both pickups on full.

But ALSO like a single coil jazz bass if you use the pickup selector to solo one of the pickups when it's set for single coil it does that, but then it is NOT humbucking and you get single coil hum just like in a jazz bass with single coil pickups when you solo a pickup.

And as single coil jazz bass fans know this is the price you pay for that single coil tone and clarity.

Agreed. As versatile as the stock L-2000 is, the single coil option is the biz. Mine came wired that way from the factory = both outer coils. I love it. I would do the mod if it wasn't already there. It takes a good bass up to a whole 'nother level.

I've ordered a switch and a push-pull pot so that I can do the k-mod and the OMG mod.

Does anyone have any sound clips of the OMG mod? I can't seem to find any.

Yes that's the theory. A two position (the original G&L switch is usually described as on-none-on. And you'd think that the three way version would be on-on-on where the center position connects all contacts. That is what makes sense.

But life isn't so sensible at times. I've ordered on-on-on switches of the normal type and what I received was really a on-off-on so go figure!

In any event none of the above is right for the K-mod. That takes as I said the special "three way" configured switch. This is often listed as DP3T on-on-on. But sometimes descriptions are vague or even wrong. Best to see if you can verify the contact diagram before ordering.

For example the correct switch from Digikey is CKN1139-ND

Which is listed as 4PDT On-On-On

The key is it's 4 poles of double throw, but in the center position only HALF of the poles switch to the other side!

But you have to be careful not to buy the other three way switch which is correctly listed as 4PDT On-Off-On. The names given these switches can vary depending on where you buy them and who made them.

I bought one of those switches off Classifieds, didn't have the opportunity to try it yet. Surely I will measure it before I install it! Thanks for the heads-up!

I actually also have the OMG mode available on mine as well, again via push-pull. I think I could rent the thing out to dentists for loosening fillings! That said, I haven't spent that much time finding the more useable tones for that setting (i.e. rolling the bass way back).

I know! 3TSB has always been one of my favorites, but I'm also a sucker for Sonic Blue, and a matching headstock with that finish would definitely be a must! :D CAR is also a great color, and Vintage White is a classic look, with a tortoise shell pickguard, of course.

Oh well, the weirdo that I am.....The planning stage is one of my favorite parts of the process. :D
