The sunburst is not as vivid as I expected but otherwise it has the exact feature set I was looking for. It's impressively well built for what I paid. It was almost perfectly set up out of the box. I just replaced the pickguard screws with black ones.
I filed the nut a bit and set it up with D'Addario Chromes 65-132, tuned to A0. I intend it to be my sludgy/prog metal bass.

just got some TI Jazz flats for my L2000, just the tone I was looking fir when playing with my fingers!
Sick mods bronin and love the blues. You have the best looking SB-2s around!
So some of you have have read I have a green Brunswick SB-2 modded with an EMG BT preamp and side football jack. I like the BT a lot. Its not clipping with a fresh 9v and sounds pretty transparent. But it may in time as the battery drains.
Anyhow, something about an active SB-2 is weird, and I have a need to mod stuff so this is my target. Thoughts on these options:

- Leave the BT and add a preamp on/off switch
- Remove the BT and fill the hole with a 3 way pickup switch
- Remove the BT, fill the hole with a TBX tone control, and possibly add a 3 way pickup switch
Were it mine, remove the BTC and put a Fender no-load tone pot (or even a push/pull to remove the tone from the circuit), so you have the best of both worlds - SB-2 and SB-2T.
But that's just me.
I'm going to do my review of the mods under these pictures because they show the mods better than mine
Mod 1: Swapped the 250K pots for 500K. I get more tonal variation when adjusting the pickup volumes relative to each other. I can get more boom out of the neck and more "hit" out of the bridge. And the all-on tone hits harder, but not in a way that I had to adjust the gain of my preamp when switching from the stock SB-2.
Mod 2: Reversed the split-coil positions. Better tonal balance across strings. Bonus 1: my dirt pedal responds better to the A and G relative to the E and A (one thing I struggle with is setting O/D so that high and low strings get the same amount of dirt). Bonus 2: I like the plucking position better, although I'll eventually add a long thumb rest that gives me an anchor closer to the neck.
Mod 3: Shielding the cavities with copper tape. It reduced the noise a lot but not to zero. But it's more tolerable through high gain now.
So overall it's still my beloved SB-2, just more of everything I love about it. I'm quite pleased.

Guys - I'm about to buy a beautiful old L2000 bass. I'd like to do the 'K mod' so I can select the OUTER coils. I will get a tech locally to do that for me. Can anyone link me to a diagram/video that will explain the process? I know there are various threads on TB and elsewhere but sometimes it's hard to tell if it's the exact mod I want, and I am seeing some conflicting information. Thanks!

Thanks!! Actually I just spoke to the tech and he's familiar with the mod so it should be OK. Question - when the switch is replaced, can it be changed with one that looks the same (so still has the red tip)?

Single coil is my favorite mode for my L2000. Sounds so good.
I'm like you...I have a need to mod basses. Of my four current G&Ls (two Fullertons, two Tribs), three are modded. Only my Kiloton remains untouched. I would go with option 1, mainly because the other two begin with "Remove the BT." With the BT You get both bass and treble control. AND that bass and treble control has boost as well as cut. With a normal tone control, you get treble cut only. And why add a 3-way pickup switch when you have separate volume controls for each pickup? Of course, I could say "None of the Above," because your battery should last a year if you unplug the bass between uses. Just put a new one in now, drop a note in the case with the date on it, and change it in about 11 months--or six months--or whatever makes you comfortable. Just my 2-cents worth. You can get the replacement caps or you should be able to remove the old ones. They just slide off. Whether or not they fit the new one depends on the shape and size of your replacement.
Ive had both outer and inner coil mods and I prefer outers for sure. But honestly I don't love either. Series (non omg) is where it's at! For my personal preference of course.
I appreciate your comments! The 3 way switch is really just a way to remove the single from the circuit and its load when soloing the split. Sort of like the MIJ Boxer Fenders. Ive also considered 500k pot replacements. I aim to reduce everything in the circuit from pickup to jack while keeping flexibility.
Now you have me thinking about the input impedance on the BT. In theory 1 Mohm should marginalize the loading effects of each pickup already. I guess it depends on the schematic. Something to look into. I could keep the BT and add 500k pots.
Anyway, thanks again for the comments! So do you feel the Kilo doesn't need mods, or you just haven't gotten around to it yet?

I'm a strong vote for the inner coils. I've tried both. The outer coils when used together give you something of the classic J-bass scoop if that's what you're after (I'm not, other basses do that better). The (outer) bridge single coil is quite close to the bridge and not (to my ears) more interesting than the bridge pickup in parallel. The inner coils, when used together, give a sound I've not heard elsewhere: a bit MusicMan-ish in terms of focus and with a really interesting midrange character that sounds great live. The (inner) bridge single coil, by virtue of being back from the bridge a bit, has an actually useful—non-honky—quality. The (inner) neck single coil is the single coil available on the L-1000 which I find to be quite useful, with a bit of a 50's (non-split) P-bass character to it. In short, the inner coils have given me a bunch of distinctive new tones, all of which are useful.
Interesting. Any clips of that sound at all? Seems as though the default mode in YT is outer coils.
How are the outer coils spaced? It sounds more like 70s spacing to me (my preference)
