G&L Club Part 7

BTW, if anyone wants an L2K with a 1½" nut, Upfront Guitars have a couple in stock, one under 9 lbs and in Frost Tangerine Metallic

Greg at Rocket Music has a 3TSB LB-100 with 1½" nut on order for summer delivery available.

Nothing on the Fretnation or Speciality Traders websites that I've noticed.

Two takes of the same song over three days. Both on my L1K. I had the switch all the way forward, treble dimed and bass at 0, trying to get that honky Wal sound. I did run it through a compressor and EQ, via software, off of my signal through my SansAmp. So that may have thickened it up a bit.

Edit: bonus SB2 hanging next to me!

I was at a local store that had a used USA kiloton in stock. The pickup had an add-on piece of plastic that fit perfectly in the space above the bass-side of pickup screw, so fill in that void and create a larger space to rest your finger. Has anyone seen this before? Any idea where I can buy it?

Here's a pic of it. Kinda hard to tell, but it's just a black plastic spacer that was cut perfectly to fit the pickup

Zero Mod?!? Or maybe someone's good imagineering and a 3D printer.

Apparently I've gotten the wrong end of the stick about this!
So, the best I can hope for is a Kiloton with a 1 5/8" nut with a 9.5 radius?
I could live with that. It's mostly the Jazz size narrow nut my left hand objects to.

Notwithstanding the deletion of the 7½" and 12" radii, that bass options page is still saying this about nut widths:

1 ½" nut width traditional to a J bass, Leo brought it with him to Fender Avenue for the ASAT Bass and SB-2.

1 ¾" nut width traditional to a P bass, Leo brought it with him to Fender Avenue for the L-2000 and other models.

I guess the now-universal 1 ⅝" nut width is also "a nice mid-way point" :smug: I can hear Seinfeld's mother saying something like, why don't you like it, it's nice? Or, perhaps....

Kilo 5 Fretless came back today. 2.5 months to get a neck replacement (maxed out truss rod on original neck). New neck plays great in the 10 minutes I had to spend with it. I had them install TI Jazz Flats when they built the new neck. I know many fretless players like rounds, but TI Jazz Flats have been my go to on most of my basses including previous fretless ones.

I had G&L do a new neck on my 2007 SB-2 a couple years ago--ski jump & truss rod issues when I bought it used. It took about 3 months for me to get it back. To this day, the neck and setup they did are excellent. It was well worth the wait.

TI Jazz Flats sound to me like they'd be an excellent choice on a fretless bass. They're great strings.

That's a nice burst. I like that you get to see a lot of the woodgrain before it starts to fade to the darker edges

Okay the black one is here. Just like the initial red one that I bought a week earlier, this black one is not the same bass that was shown on clearance sale page. It has no detectable fit or finish flaws like those that were described and pictured on the one that I thought I was purchasing, which was supposed to be the reason for its further reduced sale price. In that regard....yay! It weighs exactly 8lbs, 8.5oz which is ideal for me, but not the 7.5lbs that was advertised.

The red one played well right out of the box, I just filed the nut slots down a tad to personal taste. This black one does not play well at all, and arrived with excess neck relief. I got the neck straight via a lot of rod tweakage, but used up quite a bit of rod travel in the process, although there is still some travel left. At this point it frets out badly everywhere above the 11th fret. The fret rocker reveals at least 7 high frets in various locations. It will need a total fret leveling to make it playable.

Still, I'm keeping the thing because for the price I paid, and how great these little basses sound, it's worth my time to make it right. Since I'll be doing the leveling, I'll be able to add any necessary fallout (no pun intended) to the upper frets.

(no bonus free gig bag this time)
