That's interesting that you referred to this bass as a cherry burst. It looks just like my M-2500 Tribute which was sold as a honey burst but I've always said looks more like a cherry burst. This pic makes me think that indeed, some of the Tribute M-2500s are cherry burst rather than honey. See pic:

Ran into a decently priced MXR M81 and am curious if it would be redundant to buy a preamp pedal if the L-2000 inherently has signal-boosting capabilities? Are these preamp pedals aimed at passive basses with no EQ?

I suppose there isn't much in the way of mids adjustment, and the pedal could do this. I just don't know if the purchase would actually do anything. Thoughts? Thanks.

Well I have 2 pre amp pedals a Two Notes Le Bass and a Hartke VXL Bass attack.
They work fine depending on exactly what you want.
I use them with both ASATs and the L1500 for a bit of tone shaping, having said this I am finding more and more now that I have the Darkglass M900 amp I am using them less with G&Ls.
It's true the signal is so hot and full that in most circumstances I feel I need to just run them clean.

The MXR is a good pedal, get it and if it's a no go it should flip relatively easily

What I have read suggests it's a good idea as a backup to an amp should the DI out fail. Additionally, it's useful when an amp is just not available. I've played through cruddy PAs before. My monitor was weak and sounded awful.

Hmm, based on the color samples on the G&L site, it does look more like their cherryburst rather than their honeyburst.

FWIW I also have a honeyburst Stingray that is closer to the G&L cherryburst than the G&L honeyburst, but it is different (in person, it looks less orangey and the color is a deeper shade, especially at the edges of the burst). I've never been able to photograph it well enough to capture how good it looks in person, but here's an old pic from around the time I bought it.

I carry a Sansamp Paradriver in my gig bag as a backup in case I have a failure with my amp. It has a DI out on it and I would be able to hook it up that way and pump my bass through my monitor.
I've never had to do that, but it is my backup plan. If you feel you need some extra tone shaping a good preamp is a good idea to try. I've never felt the need myself but your goals are probably different than mine.

BTW, I picked up an old MusicMan HD150 Amplifier last week and used it at my gig last Saturday into my usual Genz Benz NeoX 212t cab. My L2KE killed through that thing.
Kind of cool to play a 35 year old bass through a 37 year old amp!

My current "gigging" situation (church) has me running direct with no amp. I'm using a Boss PQ-3B parametric bass EQ pedal into the house passive DI box. It works adequately, though I've been looking into ways to make it better. The MXR was one of the options I was looking at. Reviews I've seen have indicated that it's a nice preamp if you want a clean pre without a lot of inherent character built in. So I've ruled it out just because I'm already getting that sort of EQ through my Boss pedal. The MXR M-80, on the other hand, seems to have more character built into its EQ, but less overall functionality in terms of the DI portion of the pedal.

Running through a passive DI, I tend to either run through the Boss pedal engaged with some boost in the overall gain structure on the pedal for my passive basses (LB-100, Sting signature Precision) or with the Boss off for my L-2000s, but with the L's preamp engaged.

A pre pedal, especially if it is true bypass, can give you stomp-and-go tone changes mid-song or between songs. Useful even using a bass with big tone shaping abilities.

Hey everyone, just putting this thread out there in the club only as a feeler. Two weeks ago I just bought a perfect 2014 G&L MJ 5. I love this bass in every way. It is beautiful to look at, and sounds and plays better than any jazz bass I have ever owned. The pickups are dead quiet. My only problem is, as much as the jazz pickups are fantastic in every way. I am missing my MFD's. Does anyone have an M2500 they would want to trade me? I'm looking for one in orange, cherryburst or red preferably. Must have a maple board, made in U. S. only.
