G&L Club Part 7

So I've had my SB-2 for a few weeks now, 2 rehearsals, one gig and a lot of playing at home.
I've spend the last few weeks getting to know this bass - mostly using the P pickup. In the last couple of days I've started working with the J pickup and I really like to way it warms things up when rolling in ~20% volume to 80-90% of the P volume.
Shortly after getting it I changed the original D'Adarrio's to GHS Pressurewound 45-105 which has been my favorite string for a couple of years. These Pressurewounds have an aggressive nature to them - part of what I love about them! But just for kicks tonight I tried a set of LaBella DTF 45-105 on this bass but I did not like them on it. They completely changed the character of the bass but the character is one of the things I love about it along with the feel of the neck, weight and simplicity.
So I'm curious what strings others are using on SB-2's. Not that I'm looking to change from the Pressurewounds, just looking for input from the group.
Also, I noticed that my Snark tuner is MUCH more stable on the SB-2 than any other bass I have when clipped to the little pointy part of the headstock(G&L ID?). Anyone else experience this?
I think my next bass will be a Kiloton - I'm going to play one this week.

Since purchasing a new L2500, I keep waffling on which G&L to sell. I'm finding it much easier to buy basses than sell them! First I put my M2000 up for sale, then I took it down and listed my LB-100 for sale, then I took that down and resisted my M2000. They are all different and lovely. However, my M2000 is now back up for sale. Not only is it beautiful, it is only 8.3 lbs in Swamp Ash. Please buy it before I change my mind again. Got to admit I'm a little worried about selling my Jazz ( my only Bass )to fund an G&L, they're quite thin on the ground over here and I'm chasing an L2500 Lined Fretless which will be like hen's teeth.

May have to import one which I've never
done and I've never bought without playing before either. That and not knowing how long I'd be Bassless is making me hesitate.

No, but I seriously considered swapping out the pickup selector switch for a blend knob on my L-2500. ...sold it instead. I'm just not a fan of pickup selector switches, I guess. I hope that's not heresy on this thread :). Vol / vol / tone would work for me too. I'll bet both have been done.

I'm thinking about getting either a Kiloton or L2000.
They are obviously different animals but can anyone tell me the difference between the Kiloton MFD pickup wired in Series/Split/Parallel and the L2000 M-spec Pickup wired in passive but the same options?
Is the L2000 a Kiloton on steroids or the other way around with just a bridge pickup? I know the L2000 is considered a "tone monster" but is the Kiloton truly a unique sounding bass?
I played a Kiloton for about 30 minutes when I purchased my SB-2 (I absolutely LOVE THIS BASS!!) but haven't played an L2000 yet.

It was discussed, maybe in this thread, whether or not the K-ton, L1500 and L2000 bridge pickup are all in the same location. Somebody actually overlayed them in a graphics program and the locations turned up to be very similar. It seems to me that any of the 3 options wired as you describe would sound pretty similar to a L2000 bridge pickup solo if all are run passive. I'm sure there are subtle differences, but not big ones. I've owned and A/B'd L2000's and L1500's and can vouch for that similarity, at least to my ears. It would be interesting to hear if anyone finds the K-ton is unique in this regard (other differences are obvious).

I almost always have my L-2500 in passive mode (neck/series/passive is my favorite setting), so both a V/V/T mod or a blend knob mod in place of the preamp sound like pretty interesting ideas to me.

But, since I tend to use both the treble and bass knobs to tweak the tone, and especially since I tend to roll the bass down even lower than the treble, a single treble rolloff tone control would probably not be as useful for me personally. I think the bass sounds significantly better with the treble up higher and I usually keep it between 3/4 on and full on, whereas I tweak the bass mostly between about 1/2 and 3/4. But, again, that's my personal preference for the bass and I get that others might think differently.

So, given my personal preferences, I suspect I'd find a blend knob a lot more useful than a tone control. As I said above I prefer the neck pickup. I generally use the bridge pickup only when I want some extra bite, plus I'd say I use the "both" setting even less than "bridge". Having a blend knob would be useful for me as a way to blend in as much of the bridge pickup as needed to get the amount of extra bite I was looking for without being forced into an all-or-nothing choice between the neck and bridge pickup the way the bass is naturally configured.

I doubt I'd ever try modding my bass to get one of those two options (V/V/T or blend knob) - and I really do like my L-2500 a lot as-is. But those two ideas are kinda intriguing....

I think the Kiloton and L1500 have the pickup in the same spot but their pickup is a little closer to the neck when compared to the bridge pup on an L2000.
