G&L Club Part 7

NBD yesterday! I have been playing the SB-2 Tribute I picked up a few months ago and it's great for the various covers my work band does. I'm very happy with the range of sounds I can get from it. I still wanted to try a USA G&L but thought of that as a "someday" proposition... until this showed up in the classifieds. I held out for a couple days but it was mint (in more ways than one :D), the price was right, and I couldn't stop looking at it (especially the grain on the fretboard)... so here we are!

2018 SB-1, surf green, basswood / chechen. Neck looks quartersawn though it's not on the spec sheet—I recall seeing posts here that G&L was doing this—standard nut (1 ⅝") & profile (9.5"). 8 lbs 10 oz on a kitchen scale. Needs a little setup and different strings for my preferences but I've got whatever the opposite of buyer's remorse is.

I can honestly say my sb1 is hands my favorite sounding and feeling....I've switched to short scale and probably will end getting of my long scales....

Except my sb1 .tone and feel are too perfect. I hope you end up loving it as much as I love mine. Nice find congrats. Have you played it with a band yet? Those pick ups punch right through.

As far as I know, the M series pickups we wound differently, to have lower output than the L series pickups. I'm guessing they do that since they are using the M series pickups with an active preamp (boost and cut, as opposed to cut only on the L series).

You're correct, they are different. The M series pickups are (as you mentioned) wound less hot so they don't overpower the active preamp. They are also wired for series mode only.
L series pickups can be used in parallel, single coil, and series.

Interesting....been a bit bummed lately when listening to YouTube clips of the L2000 - I here cats getting bright, J type of tones and try as I might I couldn't reproduce those tones.
I hit up Steve Araujo (I'm fairly certain that's the dude's name) for his setup and, and combined with that knowledge I cranked both the bridge and neck pickup as low as I can get them.
There are the tones I'm after!
I never would have thought 3-5mm would have made such a difference!
Another day, another thing learnt!
