Volume pots wide open on the SB-2 (1997) gives me crazily brutal tone. Not really the tone I'm looking for. But the thing plays so nicely! I get those harmonics too if I don't strike the strings just so. Try backing off the volumes a bit. And maybe lower the pickups?

Definitely lower the pickups. I have an L2000 Tribute and lowered the pickups as far down as they could go, then adjusted the bridge pup to balance things out. The pickups are still crazy hot even that low, but the sound is much more manageable.

Definitely lower the pickups. I had my neck pickup really low and the bridge pickup fairly high in comparison to even it out.

I actually felt like the SB-2 had a mid scooped sound compared to my LB-100.

Japanese G&L Premium fivers can be ordered with either 4+1 or 3+2 headstock. Just like Tributes, they don't have the aluminum shaft Ultra-Lite tuners, the wood is not quartersawn, and on the 3+2, the G key - and possibly the D key - are not positioned/oriented as on a modern US model.

Well, that pretty well sucks that the Japanese models have an option you can't get on a U.S. model. Unless.... has anyone actually tried to order a 5'er with the 4+1 headstock? Or just been told by a dealer "no, you can't get that"?

I would definitely prefer the 4+1, 'cause the 3+2 looks plain silly. Chubby little thing!

I've asked Greg @ Rocket Music and the response was "no". It would be a nice option as I much prefer the look of the 4+1 over the 3+2.

I don't know if it is an option at customer's choice in Japan. I should have written: "can be found" instead of "can be ordered".

On the 4+1, look at the very Fender-ish shape with the curve inversion.

Regardless, they make 'em. U.S. custom orders should have the option. I have an L-2500 and I never really minded the headstock (which is 3+2). But, after looking at the picture above, mine will never look as good to me again.

other things that aren't offered in their US line is the carved top L series they did in the tribute for a while. They also don't have the option of mahogany bodies for their US line, but the tribute m-series gts have mahogany bodies.

What's up, everybody? Little backstory first: I'd been interested in picking up a G&L for a while because of their overall good reputation, and the fact that it was the last company Leo Fender designed for. I ordered an M2000 Tribute last June, and although the sound was great, the QC was bad on my particular bass. I returned it and picked up a Musicman Stingray 4H instead, and I love it. I also picked up a Fender American Standard P bass a couple months ago, and I love that, too. So, while looking for another bass to give me a different tone, I decided to give G&L another shot. I just took delivery of an SB-2 Tribute in Bordeaux Red, and I'm glad I gave the brand a 2nd chance. Light weight, flawless finish, chunky neck, great fretwork, and GREAT tone! It feels similar to my P bass and Stingray, but also sounds different than both. Aggressive and forward when both pups are wide open, and a lot of other sweet tones when one or the other is turned down slightly. I thought that I wasn't going to like the lack of a tone control, but so far, so good. And here's the obligatory pics:

Trying to plan out color options and just realized G&L doesn't offer sea foam or surf green. Is belair green close to either? I know these colors are hard to tell from pictures, but belair looks to be a bit darker shade of green.

I think Belair Green is supposed to be between the two in terms of shade. It's definitely darker than Surf Green though.

Yeah, Belair green is darker than seafoam and surf greens. It's a pretty strong, bright color, IMO. My LB-100 is Belair. I can never get pictures to do it justice.
